The benefits of using biometrics instead of passwords...
-
I was locked out of my account for two weeks
Oh - maybe not such a good idea after all...
-
Yeah, there was definitely no way to predict this as soon as the plans were announced. Voice recognition is perfect and phones never distort your voice
-
@PJH Biometrics... over the phone?
Oh, yeah, since there are high chances that you'll end up with 8kHz mono track which will potentially have additional distortion and glitches, I have no idea what could possibly go wrong...
-
@Onyx
Well, it probably would have gone a lot better if they had used Lunix voice recognition technology instead of WindowsSeriously, though, I have no idea how Microsoft's activation hotline voice recog is so bad. And you can't even practically fall back to dtmf, because there are too many letters.
-
Pros:
- Can't change password
- Can't log into account
- Password can be stolen using a microphone, a piece of tape, or a camera
- Password is visible at all times in public
Cons:
- I can't think of any
Oops, I put the headings on backwards. Sorry.

Graft new fingers or handle pinapples for a living.
Facial reconstruction is also a possibility.
All very expensive and/or painful.

@Luhmann They work as a username, but they get used as a password.

@Jaloopa I would download a thumb drive...
-
@bb36e What did you do with that poor Shift key?!
-
@dkf But it's such a useful button to have!
-
@bb36e
I want a HACK button
-
@Luhmann I want an Enhance button!
-
@bb36e Ah. It's unix hardware. I'm safe!
-
@dkf said in The benefits of using biometrics instead of passwords...:
@bb36e What did you do with that poor Shift key?!
Forget Shift!
Why's the |
\ key in such an awkward position?
On this keyboard, I'd extend my pinkie finger over to Enter a newline, and get a backslash instead!
-

You can't transfer biological payloads over the phone.
Speaking from experience. I've ruined many a handsets trying to give phone-sex operators a facial.

On this keyboard, I'd extend my pinkie finger over to Enter a newline, and get a backslash instead!Welcome to the wonderful world of "lol let's make up our own keyboard layout." Population: every keyboard and laptop manufacture in existence.
If you happen to know someone who thinks their clever new keyboard layout is clever, calmly explain to them the importance of muscle memory, and then beat them in the face with a crowbar until not even dental records will help.

On this keyboard, I'd extend my pinkie finger over to Enter a newline, and get a backslash instead!That was why I made my comment above! Way back in another life, I started in computers doing QA on AT&T unix systems. I remember those keyboards all had those screwed up return keys. (Of course, I didn't know they were screwed up until I changed to PCs in the late 80s/early 90s...)

Also mean anyone can impersonate you.
I think the vocaloid engine powering Hatsune Miku had demonestrated that if you got the voice sample for each of the 50 syllables in Japanese, you can replay any Japanese conversion or even songs of that person (In that case of Hatsune Miku, the voice sample come from Saki Fujita).
Using voice recognition as biomatric authentication is never secure.

At the same time, writing your password on a post-it note and sticking that to the frame of your monitor is probably as secure as most people need for a desktop computer. I have yet to see a method of hacking post-it notes remotely.
-
@ben_lubar Post-It note is not required if you can perform MITM attack, or just steal the database of some other system to recover their account's password (if you're lucky, you may even be able to get plaintext passwords) and hope some people use the same password everywhere.
-
@ben_lubar Just wait until we get the post-IoTs.

hmm.... i am now really tempted to order a set of custom key caps that replace right shift with a "cybercrime" button.
also props for the correct keyboard layout.
do you have any idea how hard it is to get a 105 key keyboard with the inverted ell shaped return key in the en-US layout?
flipping all but impossible i tell you!

Dude, no, even better: replace Caps Lock.

you mean the button that already reads "Bat Signal"?
-
The problem with 105-key keyboards is that the left shift is too small, because they put the extra key on the bottom row on the left, when the left shift key was already smaller than the right one).

Discussing keyboard preferences shatters the illusion that we're all mostly alike and that we can get along. Worse than indenting and braces even.

and that's just keyboard layout differences, wait till we get into the membrane vs. buckling spring, vs cherry mx, vs lazar switches.

As long as I don't have to listen to anyone's loud keyboard my eyes just kind of glaze over when you guys get into that nonsense. Cheapo keyboards for me!

ah. they you would be wanting either the Cherry MX Browns for the tacktile feel without the click, or the even quieter Cherry MX reds without the tactile feel...... of a fricking lazor keyboard.
