Oneboxing hyperlinks is stupid

So I paste this: https://teksavvy.com/en/residential/internet/dsl
It gets oneboxed to this:
https://teksavvy.com/en/residential/internet/dsl
(image for archiving purposes):
http://i.imgur.com/SLkzA8q.pngThis is stupid. The hyperlink was meaningful. Residential Internet DSL. The onebox is stupid-- it's just the favicon and the entire website's name. I know it's relying on document.title or something stupid like that, but that's stupidly stupid.
If the Onebox doesn't provide useful information, can we just keep the Hyperlink?
Or do something @boomzilla did with the Gootube links? Include the hyperlink in the onebox. So it'd look like this:
-
Even things with an actual onebox end up with the kind of mangled title that means you need to hover and see the link target for things like "what site is this? Is it a credible news source or some crazies"?

Please regal us on how you expect our meager software to accomplish such a thing.

Just do what Jaloopomatic is saying: do it for fucking everything.

Oh. I didn't realize that was what he was inferring.

That's what I inferred. if it isn't, then I'll say it.
But the goddamn link on fucking everything.
-
I'd rather get the "helpful" oneboxes fixed so that clicking on the image opens the link instead of just linking to the image.
E.g.:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_america
Clicking on the globe image links to
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/43/Location_North_America.svg/200px-Location_North_America.svg.png
. Why, what did you want?

http://i.imgur.com/SLkzA8q.pngAn easy workaround it either to put other text around it so it doesn't one-box or put it as an HTML anchor tag. ;)

Yes, that is a perfect solution. I will just try to remember to always mangle data I want to tell people in order for it not to get mangled. :/

I thought I tried that one, and it didn't one-box. Hrmph. I did try markdown's quick-link syntax, and that one-boxes, too.

Quick-links inside

tags are still 'quick-linked' instead of displayed as-typed. Order-of-formatting issue?Filed under: Hyperlinks are hard.

@djls45
<code>
tags don't disable all highlighting inside them... if you want that, enclose the text inside back-quote characters (`

(the
<code>
tag does appear to disable some highlighting, but it's consistent.)edit: using two backquote characters at each end works too (
``text``
=>text
) -- that can help, when you're trying to quote code that contains`
characters.

Should we just get rid of iframely?

I would not really miss it. On the plus side, this would help with page scroll jankiness, right?

What if we tried it over the weekend?
