[Solved] Windows 10 multi-monitor help
-
As you may or may not know, I own a Surface Pro and a Surface Dock. An external monitor is connected to both the Surface dock and a few other devices, including my desktop computer. This monitor automatically selects the correct input when it detects a signal and no other device is on, which is great. I configured it as my primary screen in Windows 10 for obvious reasons.
Now the problem: Sometimes, I want to use my Surface and my desktop computer simultaneously. I don't want to have to disconnect the Surface from the dock every time I do so, for several reasons (USB devices connected to the dock, charging, etc.). But if the dock is connected, all applications open on the invisible main screen and there is no way for me to move them to the smaller screen.
Is there any hidden shortcut for moving windows between screens that I don't know of? Or is there any way of selecting the correct screen when opening an application?

DisplayFusion could help with that, but I think you'd be better off just telling Windows to disconnect the display. Dunno if there's a commandlet that could do that for you...
Edit: Check out this post:

Good idea, but:

The only way to do that I know is to open the settings app. Which will, of course, open on the wrong screen.

@asdf Sorry, edited my post just as you replied.
Does Multi monitor tool still work in recent Windows versions?

Win+Shift+Left/Right used to work as far back as 7. I haven't connected a monitor to my W10 laptop to check but I suspect it might still work.
As for the second question, the only programs I use that somewhat regularly offer that feature are the pre-launch config programs for various games.

@Tsaukpaetra OK, turns out it works on Windows 10, but after re-enabling the second screen Windows has forgotten its settings for that screen: That it is the main screen, that monitor 2 and 3 (the TV) should both show it, and that it's physically above the other screen.
Unfortunately, not very useful. :(

@sp_ It actually works. o.O
Which is surprising, because the last time I tried that, it didn't. Maybe fixed since the anniversary update?
Anyway, thanks a lot and have a virtual .

@asdf Just windows key + left/right will work. Moves position by position, but that should be enough.
-
@Magus Nope, that resizes the window to use the left/right half of the screen since Windows 8.
-
@asdf And then you press it MORE TIMES, and it changes monitors, as far as I know?
-
@Magus Ah, okay. Yeah, just tried that, it does after a while, but it resizes the window to 1/4 of the screen first for some reason.
-
Ah, repeatedly hitting Windows key + P also works, and even lets you disable the other screen completely, but is not very comfortable, since you can't see what you're doing.
