there is no reason for that piece of shit to ever not be on your shit list.

@accalia oh, I know. Believe me, if I had my choice I'd nuke it from orbit and use Windows Defender.

I mean, even John McAfee calls it a turd...

Doesn't show up with that search in the Start Menu because "McAfee" is not part of the shortcut name; would have found it with "VirusScan" [Console], as you can see in the title bar of your screenshot 3(a?). (You could also right-click the notification area icon and Manage Features | VirusScan Enterprise.)
-
Your screenshot 3 shows that AutoUpdate was still running and thus it hadn't reported the new definition versions to Security Center yet.
So did this not go away in about 10-15m, making it a non-issue?
- I like the frowny face though.

The error message said that I should use the "McAfee VirusScan Enterprise" program. The least they could've done was report to Windows the correct name that I'd find. Anyway it was a last resort, as shown by the numbers.

I did try that before I tried searching. The VirusScan Console is shown lower-center.

I didn't want to use multiple screenshots to prove the point. Rest assured that a moment before I clicked the button to start the AutoUpdate task, it read "The Update succeed...". Also note that the last run time is "Tuesday, September..." (i.e., today). I also ran it last Friday; it didn't help then, either, and Windows still said it was out-of-date today. In fact... here's the entries from the update log for each time it updated in the last week. The redacted username is when I ran the task manually.

Fair enough. shrug Still like the frowny face.
I think recent patches may have bollixed up Security Center integration a bit. I've never gotten any of those issues with VirusScan Enterprise, but Security Center likes to tell me that neither Windows Defender nor McAfee HIPS are running when I know HIPS is running.
Sometimes it's worth clicking "Fix it" just to make it go away.

The
:-(
was actually supposed to refer to "Update now" being greyed out. But if you're referring to "Turn off messages about virus protection", that does make Windows happy but doesn't really help my original issue, which was a bit too involved to bother explaining...Although it looks like accessing the address book is what's triggering the popup. Maybe I can rewrite my script to avoid triggering it?
edit: also, "no antivirus was found"
edit2: nope, it's lying. Just
Set Msg = Inbox.Items(1) : MsgBox Msg.Body
triggers it, even though that isn't "address book and e-mail address information". And I really need the script to check theMsg.Sender
attribute anyway...
-
@anotherusername Sheesh. Blakey's gone for a couple of weeks and people just can't help themselves but try to help people in the sidebar!

Newer versions should have better integration than that, though; if I get a message that HIPS is not enabled, I can enable it right from the notification. Might be a combination of OS and patch level though; you never know with McAfee.

Yeah, I feel like that button should be enabled, but I'm more inclined to blame McAfee than Windows for the failure to integrate it.

I'll just leave this here...

Yes indeed, McAfee is solely responsible for using the Security Center API properly; if my reply seemed to imply otherwise, that's not what I meant.
I might poke my machine at home this evening (since I actually have some limited managerial capabilities over the McAfee installation on it) and see if it's enabled for me. I wonder if they might have hooked properly into Windows 10 and broken Windows 7 somehow.
Edit: Or Windows 8, more likely.

I wonder if I might be able to access the Sender property if I use a macro from within Outlook instead of using interop from PowerShell. Hmmm...

McAfee locked my both of my grandparents' mobile phones when they left the state on an extended road trip, and I got a call from some hotel clerk's personal phone from them saying they needed me to drive to their house and try to fix it from their home computer linked to the McAfee account.
-
@heterodox if you're only interested in particular senders, you could create an Outlook search folder that finds the messages, and then your script can just look in that folder... I've done that too.

Wat? How is that even possible? Why would a computer antivirus program be doing anything to phones? TDEMSMIR.
-
@HardwareGeek They have a mobile antivirus app, too, and when they left the state McAfee thought the phones were stolen and locked them.

Ah, that's reasonable.

I read that as John McAfee personally taking the phones off your grandparents and locking them. It's much more awesome that way, and not even particularly surprising, coming from him.
