Post here if you shave with a double edge or straight razor or have questions about wet shaving (inb4 ). I'll post later when I figure out how to get the dadgum imgur thing to work.
-
@antiquarian I think it's a sign that you're officially too old when your starts growing hairs.
-
I might just be obtuse or have missed something, but what dafuq is supposed to refer to?

NB: Because NodeBB is
only marginally less broken than Discoursejust as broken as Discourse but with waaaay less attitudinous developers, this actually links to the entry about three post before the right one. It's originally from the Simpsons episode linked above, but in WTDWTF, Boomzilla has made it his own special brand of crazy.
As for the second, less local definition, it comes from Primo Levi, by way of Paul Graham:
In The Periodic Table, Primo Levi tells a story that happened when he was working in a varnish factory. He was a chemist, and he was fascinated by the fact that the varnish recipe included a raw onion. What could it be for? No one knew; it was just part of the recipe. So he investigated, and eventually discovered that they had started throwing the onion in years ago to test the temperature of the varnish: if it was hot enough, the onion would fry.

Mobile? That's different. You need to scroll around a bit to find the highlighted post (probably downwards).

Well, I've been using a double edge for over a year now but I still can't choose what blade to pick (when I do replace them - I tend to use them 6-12 times).
One of the things which takes me too long IMHO is preparing a good lather. Right now I use a glass bowl and a badger brush, but the smooth surface might not be helping too much. Do you happen to have a shaving mug, and what kind of surface does it have? Does it appear to contribute much to working up that lather?
-
@JBert said in Belt Onion Shave Club:

I've found that provided I have a shower first to soften the bristles, I don't need a lather at all. Just get the blade wet with extremely hot water first and you get a close cut while still being able to see what you're doing.
-
-
@JBert I started with a plain coffee mug that I wasn't using. I have the Van der Hagen deluxe shaving set including a mug and cheap badger brush that I got from Walgreens, but I switched out the brush for an Omega boar brush (available at Amazon). There's plenty of videos on YouTube about making a good lather. I'll post one when I get home from work.
One thing that helped me was soaking the brush in hot water first (not necessary for synthetic brushes) for 5-10 minutes. I haven't tried it with a glass bowl, but that seems like it would be too smooth of a surface. Try a coffee mug if you don't want to spend more money on stuff.

So this is like a full on hobby for you now.
-
@antiquarian this seems like too much work. :/

Pretty much. I have four different shave soaps, two double-edge razors and six straight razors.
@bb36e said in Belt Onion Shave Club:

It is, and there's a learning curve, but it leads to enjoyable shaves at the end. Some guys who do it actually look forward to shaving.
-
@antiquarian I used to fret about getting a good shave. I had a non-fogging shower mirror, kept my razor and shaving cream in the shower and I would shave in the shower. That worked extremely well. Especially so since I have a patch of facial hair that goes against common sense and gravity and the grain goes up and not down. I would shave towards the end of the shower while the conditioner was soaking in my hair so my facial hair had time to get softened up or whatever.
Now I just can't be bothered to give a shit. A few years ago I bought a really good beard trimmer that trimmed very close. I outline my beard and trim everything else with that. It means I perpetually have a 5 o'clock shadow, but that does not bother me and it only takes seconds to do.
The shower mirror, and shaving in the shower did help a lot for facial irritation though. If any guy has such issues, give that a try. It worked for me.

So you are a serial killer? :P

Much easier to clean than the disposables. Used to spend a bloody fortune on those since even the best ones just gave up after the first shave, or in the middle of it.

Cheaper too. The last time I bought razor blades was October last year. I got a 100 blades from Amazon for $15.

Does your beard start to soften at around 1300°C?

I got two different meanings, and there is no relation. So,
Simpsons: A story that doesn't go anywhere.
Periodic: Llama dung.
@boomzilla What's your definition?

I'm using a Merkur 180/23c and an Omega brush
My problem seems to be lather completely drying out by the time I try to do a third pass. I'm not sure why. I don't think I'm not building the lather long enough :/
I picked up some samples from Stirling Soap Co a couple months ago. Glacial Spearmint is nice, as long as you don't mind the feeling of dunking your face in a menthol bath. Executive Man smells quite nice, but I haven't given it a try yet.

I just go full neck beard most of the time.
Maintained with the finger comb.

@aliceif I have no idea why jellypotato would start after the rollback. The code hasn't changed since over a week ago.

Yes.
They don't really dull, they get clogged with shaving cream or foam or whatever. Plus since I don't shave every day, there's a bigger mass of hair as well.
I tried regular soap and water instead of foam, but it leaves some nasty razor bumps adding to my generally terribly teenage complexion.

I keep a little cup with water close to my lather bowl. When I feel like the lather on my face is drying out, I squeeze foam from the brush by pulling it flat between thumb and index finger and then drizzle in some extra water in the bowl before mixing everything again. The lather obviously gets diluted, but then going for another pass can better be done with a more runny lather.
-
@JBert Yeah, this is generally my "solution" as well.

This is pretty much what I do...about once a week or so. But with a giant beard stubble mostly goes unnoticed. Or so I assume.

I would have taken for a straight guy like Leopold but instead you're two sided
-
@Maciejasjmj My experience with disposables is that they clog with hair on about stroke 2.
-
@Weng Well, the Bic single blade disposable is ok.
But then you're trying to shave with something that weighs like 1/4 oz and it just doesn't work; at least, it doesn't work anymore for me after shaving with a DE.

You're supposed to rinse them between every stroke.

@anotherusername Doesn't dislodge my manly oak beard.
-
@Weng if it's long enough to use scissors on it, hack that sucker off and then your poor razor won't have to work so hard.

What I used to do was to run hot water through them from the back, then form my hand into a cup and rub the shaver against the ball of the hand (obviously in the opposite direction of shaving, otherwise you cut open your palm). They will still dull all too soon, but at least they're not massively clogged any more.

I've been spending a lot of time on r/wicked_edge lately. There's a lot of good information there for people considering shaving with a double edge or straight razor.

@anotherusername I do. These fuckers are just that thick.

@Weng bummer. Disposables usually last me at least a week.

@bb36e I lose track of how long I've been using one.
