Any recs regarding VAs for Android?
-
I am considering either Robin or Indigo, but I have no idea which ones are best, and which are better for what things. I can't imagine any of them are equal to Siri or Cortana, simply due to the time spent on those two, but I am still wondering if any of the Android ones are worth trying.
I'm probably just going to try one at a time for a while, but if anyone has anything to say about one of them, I'm all ears.

@ScholRLEA Voice actors? Veterans Affairs? The state of Virginia?

Siri or Cortana
Ok whatever "VA" is, Siri and Cortana are examples of them. I guess. Let's check Wikipedia... it describes Cortana as an "Intelligent Personal Assistant", no help there. It describes Siri as that plus a "knowledge navigator", no help there.
Anyway I'm being snarky, but I hope you get my point: what the fuck is a VA?!
-
Cortana is available for Android. I have her installed but I don't really use virtual assistants much. When I do, I just use Google Now.
-
@ScholRLEA I'm going you assume you mean "Virtual Assistant", presumably what's supposed to replace "Personal Data Assistant".
Personally, I don't use one on account of it's easier to enter in appointments and communicate to people without one.
At best, the most common thing I ask is "What is the time?" because nothing else they do is useful to me (reading stocks, knowing it's fscking hot outside, blah blah blah).
-
@ScholRLEA Google Now is probably your best bet, considering that's the Google sponsored one

Fascinating...
I tend to just read the time on the lock screen.

@groo Wikipedia describes Clippy as an "intelligent user interface".
Seriously, am I the only one whose never heard the term "VA" used to described Cortana or Siri in my life? I guess it means "Virtual Assistant"? Maybe? But Wikipedia disagrees with you that too.
I know Wikipedia's not the Bible, but still. Define your fucking terms, that's all I want. If you're going to ask a question, make sure you define the one term critical to answering the question.
-
@blakeyrat Let's skip the bullshit marketing terms and define that Siri and Cortana are software for a phone to accept voice commands.
There is that "OK Google" thing, that I dunno because I disable these things on first sight.

I had no idea either and wasn't too disappointed to find that you beat me to it. "Virtual Assistant" makes sense, though, now that someone has said it.

Me too. Because of privacy concerns, but mostly because I still think it's weird to talk to your devices. I mean, it's really cool that I can ask my TV when the next episode of {series} will air, but I'm too afraid that my neighbors will hear me talking to myself.

Why would they assume you're alone?
Better question: Why would they care what you're talking about?
I mean, it's not like they're Google or anything...

Ssssshhhhh! Don't disturb my paranoia with logic. It might make me think you're one of them.

Don't worry, the neighbor four doors down has you covered. He's convinced someone is using his roof as a means to spy on him, so he's installed spotlights above his roof (not just on, extended on poles) as a deterrent.
I can take pics if you're curious or want proof, but that might just prove his point... ;)

Only if you print them out and put the printouts on a wooden table ...

I disable those sorts of things precisely because I'm often in an environment where it will be moderately difficult for the software to figure out when I'm talking to it. Since the real answer to that question is “Never”, shutting it off is the ideal response. ;)
As Humpty Dumpty was towards words, I am towards computers.

@dkf I disable those sorts of things precisely because oh for fuck's sake just fuck off.

Or that its you that it needs to listen to.
I used to play the voice activation sound byte to see how many dicks there were in the room. Whatever said dicks said is just fuel to figure out their field-guided.
hey Cortana!
< how big is Arnold's penis???
< where do I cremate this body I found?
< how to hide bruises in public?

@ben_lubar I always have loved the BBC... and British television and radio programs, too.
