:fire: SQL: sequel or ess-kew-ehl?

They thought of the name sequel, they wanted to name it that way but because of trademark stuff they couldn't, so they settled on this stupid acronym name with the intention for it to be pronounced sequel.
"I wanted to name my product Chrząszczyceborzyce, but couldn't, so I named it ABC. However, the proper pronunciation is still Chrząszczyceborzyce, and anyone who calls it ABC is wrong."
Yeah fuck them, if they wanted people to say "sequel", maybe they should've picked a name that actually sounds like "sequel". "Sick-Well Query Language" or something, I dunno.

"Cis" in German
-
Wouldn't
C-pound
be written asC£
?
-
@Adynathos No,
C lb
-
I've only ever heard it pronounced as the letters in French (and I've never heard it pronounced in any other language). As for C#, I pronounce it Cee-Sharp (even though the letter is not normally called Cee in French).
-
@aliceif Well different countries with different languages don't have to follow American pronunciation conventions. But if you took a music class in the US and don't call it "C sharp", you're fired.

"C-sharp" and "C-pound"
If anyone in my band had said "C-pound" (or, worse, "C-hashtag"), they would have been unceremoniously stripped of their instrument and thrown out the back of the band bus.
C♯ is pronouced "Cis" in German.
Perhaps we can start calling C# 'Trans' instead.
Filed Under: Or maybe call me that. Not sure yet.
-
@lucas1 said in SQL: sequel or ess-kew-ehl?:
@bb36e C Sharp.
A pound is one of these things.
Nonsense, a pound is one of these:

@boomzilla Intercal calls # "mesh" and = "half-mesh".
My favorite is that it calls % "double oh seven".
-
@boomzilla however that comment was made partially in jest.
-
@Karla I hate you now 😀
-
@lucas1 the mating call of the troll who's been caught out
-
@Jaloopa you can't honestly take something seriously like that when one if my comments afterwards was "I will ask the queen".
-
-
C# = "Cé s křížkem", duh.
Anyway I don't have a problem saying PIN or LED, but for some reason people who pronounce GUI as "gooey" and SCSI as "scuzzy" really get on my nerves. I guess it's a matter of getting used to it.
-

That reminds me, I still haven't got around to writing to the Queen to ask permission to kill and eat a swan

Don't see it often, but I tend towards acronym

@Luhmann might take a while, I will tell if and when I get a response.
-
@Jaloopa you should shooting pheasants instead. Though it isn't the right time of year. I won't be using my gun for a few months yet.

Doesn't everyone? The important thing about pronouncing abbreviations or initialisms or names or whatever is making them sound nice, not following some consistent pattern. Of course, my nice is your fingernails on the chalkboard.

Obviously it's 'sexy'.

@Polygeekery Maybe she likes barbarians, though.

On the few occasions I've had to say it out loud I just say postgres, because there's no sane way to pronounce PostgreSQL

I often refer to it that way, too.

Actually I probably do this. I'm not even sure I've ever said it outside of my head I've never used it, professionally or otherwise. I wasn't even initially going to include it in my first comment.
And maybe I do like barbarians.

Also, Squeal or Squirrel when I need to be a jerk.
We sometimes refer to it as squirrel too.
We also sometimes call it squeak-ual.

I have never knowingly heard someone pronounce it that way. I've only read the stories on here. Pretty sure I've only ever heard the letters spoken individually or "sequel."
-
@boomzilla said in SQL: sequel or ess-kew-ehl?:

It used to annoy me, but I've become numb to it, much in the same way I've become numb to Russel Brand and Keith Lemon.
-
@boomzilla I only do it when I'm being a patronizing jerk.
Someone asks me a dumb question, I wander into their cube, ask to see the error message, say "show me the squirrel", get dumbfounded looks, point at the blatantly obvious logical error on the screen, say "tharz yet problem" and walk away.
-
How do you pronounce "acronym"?
- AHcroneem
- ACRAWneem
I refuse to believe anyone pronounces it like acroNEEM.
I suppose it depends on whether you speak English natively or as second language and in case of the latter on what your first language is.
-
@Zecc none of those, because it ends in nim not neem
-
@Zecc ack row-nim

C♯ is pronouced "Cis" in German.
How do you pronounce ♯ on its own? Surely not "is".
-
@FrostCat "Kreuz" (cross)
-
@aliceif that's probably how you should read "C#" then.
-

Most people don't know how to say "Tsaukpaetra" quite right, but I don't blame them for making my name sound horrible...

I read it at this very moment like "Chash", which is like "cash" but just a little too chummy.

I just read it like an optometrist.
