undefined ! You're supposed to leave it on or in "sleep" 24 hours a day so it can wake up in the middle of the night to reboot.

If I don't leave mine fully powered on 24/7, it won't come back on again. I can't even reboot it for updates.

How did you discover this, if by the very nature of this discovery the computer became permanently turned off?

Both times I've done so, over the course of fiddling with it for several days I've eventually managed to get it to come back on, although no single thing that I've done seemed to "fix" the issue, nor have any combinations of things I tried. There's more in the Status thread of you're interested.

Also, have you tried turning it off and turning it on again?

    Well, if this isn't interesting.

For anyone who wants to experience this for themselves, put your cursor below the bell, and drag upwards until the tooltip is highlighted.
    During this state:

    • If visible, the bell tooltip will always be highlighted.
    • If moused over directly after the bell, the magnifying glass tooltip will be highlighted.
      • You can do this for the chats tooltip as well, and even for the profile tooltip if you move fast enough.
    • If scrolled, the post counter will dehighlight.
    • If the bell is moused over, the post counter will rehighlight.
    • If the notification drawer is open, moving the mouse off of the bell will highlight all notifications.
    • If the chat drawer is open, mousing over the bell will highlight all text in the chat box.
    • If the profile dropdown is open, mousing over the bell will highlight all content except for the log-out button.

Opening the notification/chat drawer does not in fact deselect highlights.
Also, the highlight remains in this state even if you navigate to another page. Even if the page does not contain a post counter. If you then go to a page which does have a post counter, simply mouse over the bell and the counter will highlight again.
I managed to get the 'site path' thing to highlight on the Groups page, but I can't figure out how I did it.

The only explanation I can think of is that the bell was stolen from this guy.
    sorry for the repeated edits

The latest build has been much more obvious and in-your-face with reminding me to reboot.

Funny enough, even though there were options to shutdown, restart, shutdown and update, and restart and update, they all did updates regardless.

So... There's no shortcut to just copy the current line into this "anonymous register"?

Yes, that's what yy is. (y is the copy ("yank") command; doubling it, as for most other commands, makes it apply to lines. You can put a number in front to say how many.) The context of the quote is more like 'The yy command.... can also be expressed as dd P". But nobody sane would ever do it that way*, so TRundefined is the respondent.

    09/07/0017 - 09/28/2017

Reminds me of the time when I used an experiment to measure the speed of light and got -5*109 m/s. Note the minus sign.

My calculations were perfectly correct as was the experimental setup. Save for one small error during the measurement method.

You see, the experiment worked this way:
You bounced a laser off a mirror back into itself and adjusted the mirror thus that you got a characteristic interference pattern. Then you introduced a long piece of glass with a known refractive index into the path of the beam. Now all you had to do was to move the mirror until you got the previous interference pattern again.

Now, where did the minus sign come from? Simple: You could either move the mirror roughly 10 cm towards the laser, yielding the correct result. Or you could move the mirror about 80 cm away from the laser...

I wasn't the only one to fall prey to this - our lab assistants all knew about this problem and had a sidebet on what percentage of physics students would be flummoxed by this. And how many would recognize the error.

Of course not. They'd be using vim.

Um... yeah, what about the network firewall, Windows?

(when you click the notification, it just disappears)

I get that, too, on my work laptop when I reboot. So do other people at work. AFAIK, everybody just πŸ€·β™‚s, because everything works anyway.

  • Which of these is the proper title for a bug report?

    • The foo fails to frobnicate the widget
    • Regarding the failure of the foo to frobnicate the widget

[Edit for clarity] And are either of these sensible when assigned as a "task" for someone to do?

" 'The foo fails to frobnicate the widget' is a problem description, not an actionable task. Please clarify exactly what you would like me to do about the problem."

  • @hardwaregeek Assuming these placeholder names are replaced with something reasonable IRL, the former sounds perfect for me (at least as title; if it's the entirety of the bug report, someone's not doing their job right).

Also, please tell me the quoted text sentence is not yours. Because the required action is quite obvious from context: "Make the foo succeed at frobnicating the widget".

  • Winner of the 2016 Presidential Election

    To me,

    @hardwaregeek said in WTF Bites:

    bug report

    does not imply

    @hardwaregeek said in WTF Bites:

Please clarify exactly what you would like me to do about the problem

It implies "Please clarify the problem"

The first one sounds like a proper "bug report"

The second one sounds like someone who wants to sound important by adding fluff to their sentences writing a bug report.

  • @medinoc said in WTF Bites:

Because the required action is quite obvious from context: "Make the foo succeed at frobnicating the widget".

The tasks assigned by people who know how to write a proper bug report include things like:

    • (To a manager/lead:) Please reassign to the appropriate engineer who knows about frobnicating widgets.
    • Review this log to determine whether the right preconditions exist for the widget to be frobnicated.
    • Review this log to determine whether the malfunction is in the foo or the widget [because they are maintained by totally separate teams, and we need to figure out which team is responsible for further action]
    • Review the spec to see whether the widget is actually supposed to be frobnicated in this situation.
    • Please comment on how other_project frobnicated their widget.
    • Update to version 52.87.4598248 and test again [because I think I fixed it]

A word-for-word repetition of the problem is not a task.

Possibly. Also, someone whose first language is not English. It's the same person describing the problem as "Regarding..." and assigning "Regarding..." as a task.

  • @hardwaregeek said in WTF Bites:

This is context not in your original post.

    @hardwaregeek said in WTF Bites:

"Task" was not how you introduced the situation. "Bug report" was.

    So please understand our confusion.

  • @zecc said in WTF Bites:

Ah, missing context: Each bug report includes an ever-changing collection of tasks, with an individual assigned and a due date, the completion of each of which will (presumably) lead the team closer the the solution of the overall problem. However, the "tasks" are sometimes nothing more than a verbatim repetition of the problem title.

I edited the OP for clarity. It was clear to me when I wrote it what I meant, but upon rereading it, I see that it might not be so clear to someone lacking the context that was in my head. Sorry.

Be careful how you let your context out, some people might get turned on (or off!) from it...

    • The foo should succeed to frobnicate the widget. Please do the needful.

    Better?

we'd use a convention that MM=0 or 13 for these days. Or, more likely, some systems would use 0 and some would use 13. Or maybe -1. Or maybe they would accept any value outside of [1-12].

    FILE_NOT_FOUND, obviously!

  • @onyx Can you at least install it in a docker?

(I'm told that's the right thing to ask these days.)

Impulsively I'd say yes, that's one of the features of docked, right?
