@tufty I'm pretty sure the notifications don't combine if you got any other notifications between them, so that just means you got 8 notifications in a row that were upvote notifications for that post. If you view all notifications there will be other notifications (well, at least 1) for the other 3 upvotes.
-
Also you should change your upvotes notification setting to something other than "All," which is ridiculous.
-
Notifications don't combine if some are unread and some are read.
-
@ben_lubar From what I remember of the code, it's something like...they'll merge if you have several pile up in between looking at them.
-
When it comes to Single Page Apps, I've just come to treat any "There are X" notifications as "There is at least one" notification, and then completely ignore the number. It's more of a boolean.
And even then it's only about 90% reliable.
Because counting is hard.
-
@anotherusername Actually, no. No there aren't. That's 11 upvotes, combined into "1, and 7 others".
If I look at it now, that's 11 upvotes, combined into "1, and 6 others". But "All notifications" shows me "1, and 10 others".

This entire fucking application is ridiculous. And bugged to fuck.
-
It's now standing at "1, and 9 others". It was down to "1, and 5 others" a few minutes ago. And yes, I have done a complete page refresh.
Bugged. To. Fuck.
I'll also mention the absurdity of having notifications for upvotes, but not for downvotes. I have one post in particular that I know from the notifications has been upvoted by a few people, and yet still has a "score" of 0. If I mouse over the score, I can see the name of one of the (3, in this case, despite the notifications dropdown telling me it was only 2) people who upvoted it (but not, according to the notification stream, the last one to upvote it).
-
This is interesting:
I didn't test my upvotes notification plugin with downvotes. Well, why would I? They don't generate notifications! Here's what that post says now:
Here's my current theory. @Jaloopa originally upvoted my post. That started the notification train. But then he remembered that it's the downvote topic over there and switched his vote to a downvote.
Now...I have my upvote notification setting set to notify me at different levels (1, 5, 10, etc). When the notification comes through, if you have that setting, then it checks the number of votes.
If a vote gets switched, that can cause some...confusion. In this case, the list of people who voted was empty and I didn't check for that, so it thinks it was the 0th vote. It's not the 1st vote, so it checks, and lo and behold,
0 = 0 % 50
, so the notification goes! And since there were 0 voters at the time, and the "and others" is the number of votes minus one,@Jaloopa and -1 others
it is!I'm not sure that covers what @tufty saw, though.

Correct. I did wonder what it would do, but never expected that.
-
@boomzilla
So messing with the upvote/downvote button messes with notifications ...
-

-
@boomzilla fuck.
You guys downvote after upvoting? Sounds like
you're doing it wronga bug that should be fixed ...

Mistakes happen. This particular one happened in a thread where you're supposed to downvote everything.

@XanderTheGamer No. Discocounting (or discounting) has been defined since Dec 2014. We don't need a new term just because we changed platforms.

Yes we do, every time we say anything beginning with disco, a little bit of returns till the forum is back to discourse again.

It reminds me that it's not so bad, it's not so bad
-
@julianlam I upvoted, downvoted, then upvoted again. I wonder what that did.
-
@XanderTheGamer It's got the same arse cancer brainworms as Discourse. It's faster, but usability is an even bigger shit sandwich than even 's short bus of "special" developers managed to strain out - might as well be the same fucking thing, to be honest.
-
-
@tufty so tell me how you really feel about it?
-
@Arantor would "a depressing triumph of mediocrity over necessity, usability and good taste" sum it up?
-
@tufty so at this point should WTDWTF just make our own?
-
@Arantor … ignoring the existing solutions which just work*. Yeah, that sounds like a great idea.
* Feel free to emphasise that in any way you like
-
@tufty we couldn't possibly make it worse now, could we?
-
Yes. Yes we could.
