user_created_new_topic, anotherusername, So, is this the new mention style?

/notifications is doing this:
-
It's only the mention notifications, and it appears to only be when you loaded the page directly (pressed F5 when on the page, or middle-clicked the link to load it in a different tab). If the AJAX catches the link and loads the page, the notifications are all correct then.
-
dies it go away after an f5?
it did for me.
-
@accalia no, I did a Ctrl-F5 and it's still like that. Actually, the AJAX load looks correct, but any F5 combination results in reloading with the bug.

huh... werid.

Race condition Loading the language files?
-
-
Either your language doesn't have a translation for that string (try using en_GB) or the translation failed to load in your browser somehow (unlikely since it persisted through a refresh).

Already using it. Next?

It's happening every time I refresh the page or go to https://what.thedailywtf.com/notifications in a new tab. If the AJAX handles the link, it doesn't happen, but if I refresh that page, it does happen.
-
@anotherusername The only thing I can suggest is ignoring the notifications. It's not very helpful… :)
-
-
@pichalite so the static folder isn't static? Edit: for the record, the only stuff nginx is doing is the uploads folder.
-
@ben_lubar languages folder... no it's not anymore
-
Well, that's different... two different mention styles in the same list:
Haven't seen that top one before. Just the thread name? Compare to the dropdown, which does say it's a mention. And then there at the bottom of the image there's one of the user_mentioned_you_in ones again, which is what the rest of the mentions all looked like.
-
Thanks @pichalite.
Try accessing the site by direct IP... are the notifications still wonky?
-
@julianlam of course, the SSL cert doesn't work to access by IP...
edit: yep, it still happens.
-

At least the nginx front-end isn't using the hostname to decide what content to give you. (That's entirely lawful for HTTP and HTTPS…)

Sure, but that's a perfectly valid way to host multiple domains/subdomains on the same physical server, is it not?

Not sure what the is here? Isn't that what he said?
-
@Tsaukpaetra the way he said "at least the nginx front-end isn't" made it sound like doing that is even though it's "lawful". I don't think it's always a , although doing it when you don't need to (only one domain or subdomain being hosted on that server) would be a slight .

You have no idea what else a host is capable of doing with HTTP. There's no way to ask it (you might be able to guess from what DNS entries resolve to it, but that's an annoying query and isn't necessarily complete). You can probably have a decent go with HTTPS, except that you might well just see a wildcard certificate and learn essentially fuck all.

The hostname isn't protected by SSL when it's sent from the client to the server because it can be used to select which certificate the server sends back.

TIL
I've always gone for packing all the identities into a single certificate (using wildcards and alternate names).
