Yet another country that slept through the computer revolutions and then, 30 years later, says, "hey, these computer things are maybe kind of important-- huh, we should really have been working on this in the 70s!"

The biggest irony for me is that in Singapore, there are actual subject matter experts, like software and hardware engineers, but when it comes to such presentations and decisions, subject matter experts were never consulted. Only those business managers who, in my brutal opinion, should not ever be let near any form of decision-making, regarding the tech industry.

@blakeyrat That's nothing, my country has forbidden us from importing computers until 1991, because that would totally work to create a national industry.

Hello, long time lurker here. I think it's worth noting that Vivian Balakrishnan is known to be a hobbyist coder himself, and has ported the Singapore Prime Minister's Sudoku solver from C++ to JavaScript [1]. It's hence likely that the minister is either using the term 'operating system' loosely (being aware of the audience he's speaking to).
My only other dissent with @WPT is that I'm aware of elements within the IDA who are worth their salt, and otherwise agree with the rest of his assessment of the situation in Singapore.
Addendum - I'm likely his fellow countryman.

My issue with this spectacle is that any of the IT contractors should have at least some sort of common sense to point out the wrong terms used and the in-feasibility of attempting to build your own OS that is compatible to the wide range of devices that they were claiming to support in just 5 years, given that every year, you would also need to cater for new drivers for new devices that is going to come out into the market, and also to support compatibility for older devices, etc..
