When I say "they don't need a .casino domain name", I mean that the alternatives are perfectly adequate, not some absurdly stupid scenario where everybody carries around a giant ledger of IP addresses just to prove that we don't "need" DNS.
Ok; we don't need it.
Now explain why it's a problem that it exists?
(And, BTW, was anybody in this thread making the argument that we do need it? Because I wasn't.)
-
@blakeyrat you asked for reasons why I thought we shouldn't have it. The fact that we don't need it is a perfectly valid reason to not have it, unless there are really good practical reasons to have it that don't involve "need". I don't see any.

A lot of people make a lot of money selling things other people don't need.
What are you, some kind of commie?

No, they make money by convincing people that they do need the things when they actually don't.
Although when they actually don't need them, and they don't really offer any significant benefit over the alternatives, it's usually a short-lived fad.

Who gets .amazon? Bezos or the African government?
I don't remember we selling the amazon forest to Africa.

They paid a lot of money for it, they deserve the domain name.

Horizontal rules (hr) are too faint.
https://what.thedailywtf.com/post/894514
Of course we all knew that, and have made userstyles to overcome the shitty, shitty, "flat and faint" UI that NodeBB loves. Being able to differentiate two separate pieces of data? Who needs that? Knowing where one posts ends and another begins? For losers. Knowing where content is bordered? You're a cuntnuzzler who needs to die.

We don't even need DNS at all. All we need is some way of reaching Google and the ability to copy and paste links.

And it hinders the ability to easily look and go "is that a valid domain name? well the TLD is some random word, so probably not"
That hasn't been a valid approach for decades. Stop doing it and your problem goes away, unlike the identical problem lumped on us by the dumb retarded fuckers that designed the rules for browsers to follow so HTTP cookies don't accidentally go somewhere they shouldn't.

@Yamikuronue but "horseshoe-casino.com" would be too hard to remember?
What's the point of the .com part if everything ends with .com?

@another_sam What do you think Google is? Magic? How's it going to find those links if we don't copy and paste them?

Yes.

Jeff Bezos absorbed the Beetles catalog when he snorted Michael Jackson's corpse's ground up bones.

I always get the Amazon and the Nile confused for some reason. Maybe it's because they're both in similarly shaped continents I've never been to but which were conquered by Europeans that fucked everything up.

Since it doesn't and never did, what was your point?
-

Not everything does. There's .gov, .mil, .edu, .org, .net, and a bajillion different country TLDs.

My point is that nearly everything does end with .com*, so what's the point of .com at all?
I suspect most registrants in .net or .org also try to register .com to "reduce confusion" and getting rid of those top-level domains entirely wouldn't just reduce this confusion, it would be eliminated.
I'm not advocating removing the top-level country TLDs, or even removing .com, .org, etc, I'm just saying that as a namespace .com is entirely useless and allowing more top-level domains is not a bad thing.

So yeah

post from @anotherusername about dupes
has now generated
a dupe of my dupe because this thread has to dupe all of Blakey's posts

NodeBB attracts newly anointed schizophrenics more than Community Server seems to have done.
