What the fuck is the point of "following" someone on NodeBB?
-
So let's say you went to my profile https://what.thedailywtf.com/users/lorne_kates and clicked "follow".
What the fuck would that do that following someone wouldn't do?
-
@Lorne-Kates you send a notification to annoy the person being stalked?

Node BB must send a lot of those, since the "follow" button is for all intensive porpoises invisible and only ever clicked accidentally. "Hmm, what is green dot does it mean person is online WAIT WHAT THE FUCK IS FOLLOW?"

That is exactly, word for word, what I thought.

Due to your failure to sentence, nothing.

I believe in theory if the Unread route didn't already show you each and every new post that comes in, it would allow you to "opt in" to seeing any topic posted to by said followed to appear there. Either that, or spam your notifications specifically whenever the same happens.
I believe that if you specifically "un-watched" all the categories, this might be a bit more useful...
-
It's the same thing as if you follow someone on

So, expect to be arrested for stalking a bit later?
-
It will notify you when a person you follow makes a new thread. Past that I didn't notice anything different, but I don't use ignore and similar features so I don't know if it affects those.
-
And there's this:
-
I follow any TDWTFers I see over on community.nodebb.org to see what new topics they post.
-
@boomzilla Stalker!
-
@boomzilla
Even when not logged in, the follow +/♡ circle appears and is clickable.
Clicking it shows an unhelpful toaster.

Wait what?
Does NodeBB have a "post feed" somewhere like Twitter's activity feed?
-
@Lorne-Kates
It plays this sweet animated transition from the ( + ) to the ( <3 ) So that's something good!
@blakeyrat
Here is myNow you can finally see all my amazing posts and topics on one single spot!
Filed Under: Don't follow me, pls... I don't want the notification!

It isn't a malformed sentence. It's a MOBILE sentence. You should be able to read it fine, even if it is missing context-sensitive information.
-
All that happens is you get notified when they create a thread. So basically, it's completely useless.
They should have gone with the full stalking mode, or just removed this outright.
As with almost everything else in this software, it's a mediocre on the technical level and with zero thought put in on the design / ux level.

It makes sense on certain forums, where certain staff users typically only create threads to make important announcements.
They should have gone with the full stalking mode
That'd be way too many notifications for most people.
-
Talking about useless...

Following categories is a better fit for that.

Not if you group it by thread. "So-and-so posted 5 messages in thread XXX since you last checked this".
-
@fbmac Can confirm.
Lorne. :|
-
I just clicked @Lorne-Kates's follow button about 100 times and closed the browser tab. I wonder what will happen next.

The server will have attempted to tell you you followed/unfollowed 50 times, but fails because the connection closed, so discards the stream?

That's not as exciting as I had hoped.

Your should be found elsewhere then...

Nothing in my notifications. Maybe NodeBB is smart enough that if you follow then unfollow within a threshold, it cancels them out?
-
@Captain Nevermind, it did show up once in my notifications:

Don't know how I missed that.

Isn't it great how NodeBB only notifies you once?
Isn't it great how people still complain that other people can spam actions that result in a total of 1 notification?
-
@ben_lubar What happens with retracted actions though? As in, I fatfinger the upvote button on mobile sometimes.

I guess it depends on whether the other person notices that there's a notification. NodeBB definitely does coalescing of related notifications.
-
@dkf What I meant is, if it's the only like on that post and I retract it, will NodeBB remove that notification if it wasnt' noticed already?
-
@Onyx Nope. Retracting it would make it show up again. The only thing that deletes notifications is the 1-week timeout.
