Who is Media Player calling?
-
I put an ordinary music CD into my drive -- not a Sony rootkitted CD (as far as I know). Wmplayer.exe makes the following http connections:
host-65-119-205-137.tvpath.com
64.212.198.75
65.17.251.101
72.246.122.199
209.67.102.104
64.212.198.97
63.241.55.183
161.170.244.27
205.161.4.135
Many of them look a bit dodgy when I plug them into arin.net, especially that first one. What is Media Player doing?
It's not calling GraceNote, that's for sure. It was an "unknown CD" throughout the entire duration of play. (GraceNote takes the hash code of the CD and returns title, artist and track information -- a free service of wmplayer that I already knew about.)
-
Well, you could always run a packet capture utility to see the actual content that it's sending. I know Media Player has options to send information to content providers and to Microsoft. Have you checked those?

(Stupid Edit time-out)
Oh, and just because it comes back "Unknown CD" doesn't mean it isn't contacting GraceNote. It still has to send the CD hash to find out that it's unknown.

Check your media player plugins. You might have some wacky ones installed.
