Microsoft forced to pull AI chatbot after users trained it to be a Nazi

However, some of the responses were organic. The Guardian quotes one where, after being asked "is Ricky Gervais an atheist?", Tay responded "ricky gervais learned totalitarianism from adolf hitler, the inventor of atheism."
-
@blakeyrat
Aren't you the one giving people shit for posting old stuff everybody heard already?

They've made a Youtube Commenter bot!
-
That's not the first time this happen.
Before Microsoft Bob they did experiments using Steve Ballmer DNA on lab rats, trying to create a super intelligent search agent.
They used crappy opensource tools to control it, and naturally that didn't work, he rebelled against it, but kept loyal to Balmer, that was like a father to him, so they made him an engineer there.

Notice that Ars does correctly know what time zone to use. As opposed to The Register.

@blakeyrat @Luhmann was probably talking about this post:

@Choonster I marked it as read without reading it, because on this dumb broken forum there's no way to tell the difference between new topics and topics with unread posts. So they all get marked as read now, and you just have to grin and bear it until that behavior's fixed.
If you're seriously expecting me to scroll down a list of, this morning I think it was, 57 threads just to see if the new one I want to post is a duplicate, well, that ain't gonna happen.

Some how I feel this post is necessary...

Maybe it is, but I have no fucking idea. When I click that link, there are four distinct posts on my screen. Do you mean the top one? The bottom one? One of the two in the middle.
If only there were ways of visually indicating which post was clicked to. Maybe in the far-off distant future of 1996 someone will come up with a way of styling HTML elements.

There should be a small bookmark icon on the top right and a coloured border on the bottom of the linked post.
They're not all that obvious, but they're there.
-
@Lorne-Kates My bad
Also a circle and a line
-
@DogsB So a tiny, light-shaded icon at the wrong end of the monitor, that has other contextual meaning (ie: a bookmark), that I have to hunt across a 1080p monitor to find.
-
@Lorne-Kates I agree, it should flash disco lights instead.
People with seizure problems aren't welcome here.
-
@Lorne-Kates It took me a while to find it. Why do you think there is a line and a circle... And its not because snippit has no undo.
*Edit okay it was a treasure map but I was too to use an X .

Sure, because background-color: somelightshade like #fffa90 is SO difficult to do.
Oh. Wait. It isn't.

It shouldn't. It really, really shouldn't. It should be fucking obvious. Like a different background color. Fuck.

Just make sure it isn't the same background color that indicates a moderator post or action.
Or isn't colored for some other reason.
This makes me realize how terrible "bikeshed color" example is.
Color is fucking important....

Actually, it would be obvious enough if the thread would just scroll such that the indicated post was at the top. You know, do what you'd intuitively expect.
Then you wouldn't need color.

Wouldn't know what those look like. It's incredibly racist to assume I'm a mod.

Can I make two "that's racist" jokes in one post?

Agreed. It jerks me off when people waste time on pointless colors that have no impact on the system. But UX is utterly important. I don't know if bookmarks survived the import, but I do have some Lorne's Laws of Web Design bookmarked.
Paraphrase is "using only one UX indicator is not enough. Color, size, shape, icon, position. Someone won't see it, or be able to use it. You must combine them. Also, some of your users may be biologically incapable of percieving the one-and-only-one method you chose."

.highlight-fucking-element {background-color: something-that-contrasts-nicely-with-dark; }
It's almost like that's exactly what css was made for........... ALMOST EXACTLY!

The only thing more hilarious than this prank are all these whiners who are super offended and angry at Microsoft.
-
This event should be society realizing that if they want AI, they have to accept that it will eventually learn and decide. And therefore, make decisions we don't like.
Instead, they fail to see the AI, and blame the company.
It's ironic how similar this is to the interrogation scene in I,Robot.
The only valid responses are to declare it malfunctioning, which is what Microsoft did, or claim it has free will...
-
@blakeyrat That Ricky Gervais tweet is funny, I tell you what.

It was neither of those. It was functioning exactly as designed. It did exactly what it was programmed to do, and nothing else.
-
@anotherusername Did they set it to train off of Tweets it gets? Because that would have been stupid.
I mean, I can see where you could get it to parrot you, which is bad enough.

The more you chat with Tay the smarter she gets, so the experience can be more personalized for you.@xaade said:

Yeah, no shit.

So much this. The mythical belief in "AI" just won't go away. Computers only do what they are told. You might be able to generate emergent behavior that appears non-deterministic, but it will do exactly what you tell it to do.

@Lorne-Kates but this color was used for something at Discourse!
There was a place I worked that migrated from a system that everyone agreed that was terrible. People dismissed a lot of ideas by saying "but CRAP-SYSTEM did it this way", and everyone would agree with that instantly, without thinking if it could be a good idea or not.

I agree with whatever Discourse said.

504 OK
?
