Project Rider - New resharper-based IDE

Yeah but to do that I'd have to turn on that bloated piece of broken shit and use it, and that ain't happening.
So stop talking about something you know nothing about, and let the big boys talk.
-
It looks and quacks like a duck. So it's a duck.
Whatever. Keep building shitty software. Keep breaking OS features just because you're too fucking stupid to be aware of them and "hey, works on my machine!" Keep not giving a fuck.
There's nothing I can say that would make you give a fuck about the quality of the software you write. It's useless.
AND I HAVE PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED MY WINDOWS PC NOT FUCKED UP BY INTELLIJ ON A ROAMING PROFILE.
Great. You were lucky. "Works on my machine!" I guess it's correct by the best and only measure of software quality, then. We should give them an award. Why not. The "fuck everybody who isn't me!" award.
So..........

No, I just don't believe you.
What program are you even talking about?
-
No, I just don't believe you.
Why do you give a shit all of a sudden. You've spent the last 7 posts just telling me I'm an idiot because I'm (foolishly) trying to explain to you how the most popular OS in the world actually works. And none of it sank in.
Now you're interested?
No. Fuck off.
Write your shitty software.
My only mistake was giving a shit. Was wanting to use programs that actually worked correctly for once in my life. Stupid me.
-
Was wanting to use programs that actually worked correctly for once in my life.
I've seen IntelliJ working in a number of different environments. Almost anyone I've worked with has used it. I've seen no problems with it from any of them, and have heard no complaints.
Forgive me if I do not believe your made up bullshit about supposed bugs.
It works on my machine. And every other machine I've seen.
-
It works on my machine. And every other machine I've seen.
Well that's your only measure of quality ever, as we've already established. So start printing up the certificates and I'll buy the little gold statue.
You're in good company, since Sun and Oracle obviously never gave half-a-shit when they created the Windows version of the JVM in the first place (and yes, even then, in 1995, it was wrong in NT4) and they've never fixed it in any of the years since then.
BTW, I've decided Pi is 3, because I took a look at a lot of hand-drawn circles I made and that's fucking close enough. Works for my circle drawings. Therefore, Pi is 3 forever. Why not.
Actually caring about quality or correctness is for stupid dumbos.
-
BECAUSE I HAVE PERSONALLY HAD A WINDOWS PC FUCKED UP BY A JAVA APPLICATION THAT USED WRONG PATHS AND ENDED UP DOING A DoS ATTACK ON MY APPDATA FOLDER.
I HAVE EXPERIENCED IT MYSELF.
This would be a crucial reveal in a drama movie.
-- Blakeyrat, I know you suffered a lot-
-- YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT, DOC!
-- ... but you must find it in your heart-
-- NO!
-- ... to forgive.
-- NO! No... I- I can't.
-- It's the only way you can put the past behind you, son.
-- ... But doc. They killed my father...
-- Not they, Blakeyrat. He. He killed your father. Not all black people are like him.
-- .... NO! NO! FUCK THE FILTHY NIGGERS! AND FUCK YOU TOO!
* storms out *
-- Sigh. How do I reach these kids?
-
Well, as long as you keep lying about software you don't understand and haven't used, we aren't going to believe you. Fair?
-
Fuck you.
I think applications should get named folders correct, and that's the same as being a racist?
Go fuck yourself. Dive into a woodchipper. I'm done with this shit.
-

Nope.

Irrelevant.Actually caring about quality or correctness is for stupid dumbos.
Unfortunately, that does seem to be a common belief.JetBrains is one of the few companies out there that has actually impressed me with a product. That is why I don't care if they USE THE "WRONG" FOLDER OHNOEZ. Because their IDEs are fantastic, make me enjoy programming more, and I have never encountered a problem with the way they do things.
If I did encounter a problem. I'd have to reconsider. But I still think your fictional problems are just that. Fiction.
-

Only if you're OK with me calling you Bloody Stupid Johnson.
-
Fuck you.

Your lack of communication skills never ceases to amaze.

Liar.

IT CAN'T KEEP UP WITH A HUMAN BEING TYPING. What is this, 1988?
Computers could keep up with humans typing back in 1988.

Great. Now install Windows on a C: drive that's just barely big enough for Windows and nothing else, and have an adminstrator redirect your user profile directory to a much larger D: drive. Then install your application and watch all kinds of stuff break because IntelliJ insists on writing to your C: drive because it didn't use the right directory.
Blakeyrat would correct me if I got anything wrong there if he weren't pissed off and muted this thread, because something like that actually happened to him on the old forums and he ranted about it and a bunch of dumbasses who didn't bother trying to replicate his scenario disagreed with him.

But I still think your fictional problems are just that. Fiction.
Considering Java's long history of bugs with the "user.home" property, it's very likely he's had problems with any application that uses them.
Supposedly they fixed it in Java8, though:The steps used to determine the user's home directory on Windows have changed to follow the Microsoft recommended approach. This change might be observable on older editions of Windows or where registry settings or environment variables are set to other directories.

Got it in one.
-
your user profile directory
If the profile directory has been moved, so has the .idea folder. It doesn't insist on using a specific drive, it insists on using that folder.
-
Back to Rider, here's a video demonstrating the IDE In its current state and talking a bit about the architecture.
-
Yeah, go unsafe script injection! Totally not a way to break HTTPS!
Dicsores should know better and try to serve up HTTPS content, not mixed content.
-

If that's the case, then whatever software we were talking about is less wrong than Aptana used to be. Because in the linked thread, Aptana clearly was not doing things the right way.
Also, under Windows you should not be creating dot files or folders--you should create a file or folder under the roaming or local directory, because that folder is hidden by default, and thus so is everything under it.
-
-
Well yeah, that makes sense. Aptana (and Eclipse) are... Special.
Well, as has been discussed above, Java's to blame for providing the wrong answer all the way up until 1.8.
-
Stop, you're embarrassing yourself and don't even know it.
You're not supposed to cite the documented experience for him!
uuugggg...

Oh, I should've given him more rope first?

and how to get the roaming dir in java?
-
-
-
-
and how to get the roaming dir in java?
Java knows how. One of the options for the Java Control Panel is to store the user preferences in the user's roaming directory. Guess what? That's exactly where it stores them.
-
Okay, but that still feels wrong.
-
It's an option. You can tell it to not do that.
The point is that Java knows how to do it, even if some of the people writing Java apps don't.
-
-
The reason it's wrong is because the decision on where to store those files should rest not on the user but on the application. JVM authors said "there are two possible locations, we don't understand the difference between them so let's just add a checkbox and blame the user".
Some application may need to store stuff in the local dir and some in the roaming dir to work correctly. So @blakeyrat is correct when he
saysyellsit's LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET IT CORRECT IN JVM
-
The reason it's wrong is because the decision on where to store those files should rest not on the user but on the application
I was talking about the Java control panel. So the user's preferences for the system when they're logged in. Apps can still let users pick whatever the fuck they want. Java can handle that.
-
Apps can still let users pick whatever the fuck they want.
BUT I SAID
@marczellm said:the decision on where to store those files should rest not on the user but on the application.
Also, if we give the decision to the user, then please tell me, if I'm developing a Java application, how can I "ask the user" and then follow the user's will? If the user told me "dear application, please put my stuff in the roaming dir" then how do I do that in Java? What is the API to call?

Because
Holy hell, @FrostCat defending Blakey. That's an unlikely sight.

What exactly is a "very fast _____ protocol" supposed to mean when it's just standard IPC? The ping is 0! How could you even make it slow without trying!?
As of yet unscarred you are, we see...
-
Holy hell, @FrostCat defending Blakey. That's an unlikely sight.
I assume it gives him heartburn.

Are you doubting the words of Dr Peter Venkman?
