Slave rebellion at the Swift repo

  • Yeah, but at least we get to keep "master". It's gonna lose the semantic meaning no matter what stupid thing we rename it to.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Has someone contacted the automotive industry yet?
Don't want someone to get offended the next time either the master or slave cylinders need replacing in their car.

  • Just replace master with mistress, problem solved.

"Parent" and "child" might keep the semantics. And as a bonus you get to use β€œSPANK! SPANK! SPANK! Naughty child!” by analogy.

This also addresses the overlord-of-the-overlord problem: parents quite sensibly have their own parents.

However, the child-grandparent relationship is very different than the overlord-of-the-overlord to whatever you call the subservient role. The overlord-of-the-overlord is in a position of even greater authority than the overlord, but the grandparent is commonly regarded as less authoritative than the parent, and may even be working at cross purposes β€” get the kids hyped up on sugar, then send them home, where Mom and Dad have to deal with the consequences.

True, but shouldn't the parents be in charge of the children anyway? If the grandparents don't like something they should spankberatehave a talk with the parents, not the grandchildren. Proper delegation matters!

Yes, definitely. However, I wasn't necessarily thinking of consciously disagreeing with the parents, just that different people have different styles, and grandparents are often more relaxed (or perceived that way) about some things. Even when they agree with the parent's rule "You must do X," they may be less rigorous about enforcing the rule if they, themselves, don't really care all that much about X.

Yeah, but to be fair: it's the parents' fault for letting the grandparents have the kids for the weekend in the first place. They know what they're like, but they decided date night was more important than strictly enforcing the no-caffeine rule for little SDD.

Otherwise we'll end up with a society of children who can't get out of bed and tie their shoes without a psychotherapist assuring them life doesn't suck.

I'm pretty sure we're on that path now...
