Reminds me of when you buy things that are wrapped in a plastic bag, with the text
THIS IS NOT A TOY. Keep this plastic bag out of reach from children.
Save this packaging for future reference. Why aren't I just allowed to throw it away immediately instead? Seems much safer than having a barn full of plastic bags for the kids to one day discover and put over their heads...

Rule 12A-1.044(4)(b)
http://www.foxbusiness.com/on-air/stossel/blog/2012/01/17/more-insane-rules
The Florida Department of Revenue lists the law on its website. We called them and asked if there was a reason for the law.
Spokeswoman Renee Watters responded: "A vending machine operator that does not place the notice on the machine presumably is not in compliance with the other requirements such as registration and payment of the tax."

That looks like somebody is a Van Halen fan. They used to put in their riders that they wanted a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removed for their gigs. If the bowl was missed, they used it as a sign that more important, and possibly dangerous mistakes had been made.
In this case, it looks more aimed to tax dodges, but still interesting...

How am I supposed to know which number to report the missing notice to when the notice containing the number is missing?
-
How else will the state know if someone's running
unlicensedun_tax_ed vending machines?

Surely you'll do your civic duty, citizen, and go find another vending machine that has a sticker.
-
You know what that sounds like? Work. And you know what we think about that around here.

But how will I know that a notice is required when there's no sticker telling me the notice is required?
Surely we should pass a law requiring the notice that there should be a notice on the vending machine, so that we know to report it!

I'll bet they rely on vendors keeping an eye on each other. It's in their interest to ensure that no one is skirting paying their taxes since that gives them a competitive advantage.

Pretty clever way to try to catch offenders, it is a bit until you think about it though.

BWAHAHAAHAHH!
My office building's had 3 different vendors in the last 5 years because they keep forgetting to come around and load the damned machines!
Canteen's actually our current one, and I had to call them twice to ask that they come out and stock their damn machines. Apparently they don't actually want money.
Although last week I noticed all the machines now have stickers on them with "text [unique, or so I assume code] to [some short SMS number]" ... although it doesn't say why you would do that. Maybe just for fun.

They use that to detect you're old enough to use a phone, but stupid enough to fall for stupid tricks. Where did you think all that jerky comes from?

How am I supposed which number to report the missing notice to when the notice containing the number is missing?
How am I supposed to know to correct the missing words in your sentence when the sentence containing the missing words is?

Fixed. I blame Discourse. I'm sure it did something wrong.

"A vending machine operator that does not place the notice on the machine presumably is not in compliance with the other requirements such as registration and payment of the tax."
Do they really think, that the evaders don't read the law? Usually they are the ones who read it most carefully so they know how to defend themselves.

So it's a State Government version of the "no blue M&Ms" thing.

How else will the state know if someone's running
unlicensedun_tax_ed vending machines?Duh! Unlicensed untaxed machines won't have the sign.
<vent>
This law is really a perfect type case for the idiotic law categories. The theory is that you're supposed to notice the sign is missing and, remembering the number from another machine, take the time to report it.After all, someone who doesn't want to license and pay taxes on a machine, would never think of posting the sign anyway, right?
And it's not like the law protects anything else. The vendor can totally rip you off, have food in the machine old enough to vote, old enough for hair, and you notice the government doesn't want to hear about those problems. No sirree, let the buyer beware! That's our state watchword! But, by gum, we entitled to our license fees and our taxes!
