I am Onyx, and nobody gives a toss

  • :belt_onion:

... but I'm bored and behind on reading stuff so unread counts look intimidating.

So there, because we need a short topic in here as well, have at it!

  • Oops, wrong timing, mate. :-)

  • What are your favorite tv series, if any?

  • :belt_onion:

Well... it's gonna be a long list of usual SciFi suspects here, I guess. I currently only actively watch Doctor Who due to the lack of time.

Favorite ever? Red Dwarf. Watched it way too many times, probably going to re-watch it numerous times yet. Fill in the rest of the list with Trek, Stargate (SG-1, later ones didn't sit as well with me), B5, Farscape, Buffy... You get the gist I think.

I enjoy more "conventional" shows as well, I just don't find them as memorable enough to really mention.

  • If you like these shows give Lexx a try.

  • :belt_onion:

I did. Well, almost, didn't finish the last season (Was it 4 or 5? The one on Earth). It was... yeah, they lost me there.

Also, original Zev (Xev? It was Xev, wasn't it? But I'm sure I saw Zev as well somewhere) FTW!

  • OK, I'll throw in a few questions:

    • Marty Mystery vs Dylan Dog vs Alan Ford?

    • Favorite ex-YU band?

    • You can work on any project, anywhere, paycheck and job safety guaranteed. What would it be?

  • Definitely original Xev. It is one of the more pleasant weird series I've watched. But they lost me several times before that season, but I kept going back ;)

Tough.... did you have to put them all in one question? Dylan Dog > Martin Mysteré, Zagor >> other Bonelli.

Alan Ford is a special category of greatness reserved just for it.

Oh man, never been too much into that kind of music. I don't mind it, just not many preferences... I'd probably have to say Azra as I like most of their songs when they randomly come on the radio. I'm also not counting the ones that started in those times but still going. If we count those, Parni Valjak.

Toughie... Something in machine learning, most likely. I have no real knowledge of it right now, past essential theoretical stuff, but I was always interested in it. Never had enough time to learn more though, had to focus on skills that will land me a job rather than I wanted. I'm not really terribly bothered on what the system would do in the end, but if I can be as picky I'd say something that's involved either in robotics or gaming, not search engines and such.

I was actually never much into Alan Ford as a kid. Dylan Dog was cool when I could get it. But my absolute favorite was Marty Mystery.

Of course, this was all very contingent on finding used copies where I could, as actually buying them was out of the question.

Look into EKV. They are miles ahead of everyone else.

See, I would never get into something like that. Sounds like a very dense specialist area, where you have to go deep into the weeds, on the detriment of everything else (eg. other areas of computing). A few years down the road, you're a machine learning expert and that's the only thing you can ever do now.

And then, there's the other problem, that these sorts of problems attract all the brightest genius-level people, who were probably doing math since they were 4 and can run intellectual circles around you. Kind of like why game development sucks as a job too - it's who you're competing with, not just what the job is.

Might be similar with me. I read more DD than MM, so you know, even if overall MM could be said to be better I never read enough to really fall in love with it. I'll grant you that all the history lessons you could stumble onto in there were cool though.

I can give it a go. Not promising anything though. As I said, not my thing usually.

Well, your conditions implied job security, so I wouldn't have to worry about being without the next job.

Might be a nice change. So far I only got that by hanging around here. I'm surrounded by noobs IRL. Most of them couldn't code their way out of a paper bag, let alone explain how they did it if they somehow manage it. And I suck at a lot of what I do right now.

I'm not bothered by not being the smartest person around. I love being challenged, shown wrong and learning new stuff.

    Ah yes, there's that.

So far, I've only worked with two people whom I'd consider at my level or better than me. I'd like more.

  • What do your 2^13 posts smell like?

  • :belt_onion:

Depends on which subset you choose. Some smell of beer. Some of dirty socks. Or flowers. Or candy.

It's like a box of chocolates — most of them are nice but you never know when you'll pull out one of those nasty ones with way too much marzipan.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    Error: concept does not exist!

How did you get 2^13 posts before me?

You done goofed and got yourself a life. A classic mistake.

  • sockdevs

    A clbuttic mistake, surely?

    Indeed. Pardon my bad WTDWTF-ish.

Possibly. Would I be holding something for them at the time?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    Possibly.

Would that include the tax office?

  • :belt_onion:

Currently, no. The fuckers actually owe me money at this very point in time.

    :doing_it_wrong:

  • :belt_onion:

    Yeah, I know.

See, I had some overtime racked up but not paid out for a few months. My company paid it all out last month, BUT, the bastards taxed it as a lump sum in a higher tax bracket, even though each month was paid out separately. They are legally required to recalculate it properly and GIVE ME MONEY, but you know, taking money from people is a short process, giving it out, that takes decades.

  • @Onyx said:

Get your hands out of your pants you dirty ape.

  • :belt_onion:

E_DOES_NOT_COMPUTE. That's not holding things for someone else.

So you keep it for yourself?

  • :belt_onion:

Can't decide if reading comprehension fail, or deliberate derail.

In any case, I am rather attached to it.

  • @Onyx said:

Did you check recently? Are you performing at least hourly checks?

    Where is this?

  • :belt_onion:

Croatia, but I doubt bureaucracy is much saner anywhere else anyway.

  • Its pretty bad here in br, but it seems to be a 3WP.

  • :belt_onion:

Well, update, I'm being assured that I should get my money this month so... that's something, if it's true?

  • Oh, you weren't speaking literaly about decades?

  • :belt_onion:

    @fbmac said:

Oh, you weren't speaking literaly about decades?

In this specific case, no. But the cases where civil disputes do take decades are not uncommon here. They are almost a rule.

  • This post is deleted!

I'd say we upgraded to that, yes :stuck_out_tongue:
