Surprise! anti-adblocker now with malware
-
Oh no, but it's totally benign, and ads are totally only for the visitors benefit.
-
Just checked my LAN blacklist: looks like pagefair.com has been on it for some time.
I honestly fail to understand why so many people still appear to believe that advertising and related industries are fundamentally benign. A pox on all their houses.

related industries
The related industry of someone breaking into their hosting account and uploading a prompt to download malware?

No, all the analytics crap that only exists for the purposes of optimizing ad exposure.
The more servers are involved in delivering any given page, the higher is the chance that the page will be compromised in some way. The more pages a given server is involved in generating content for, the more attractive a target it becomes. Advertising networks are disadvantageous to web page consumers for both these reasons, and blocking as many as possible by default is simply prudent self defense.

You know, if it only worked... Play Store, "Recommended for you" section, yesterday:
Ok, I have 2048 installed, Scooter is probably due to YouTube, some random game... wait... 50 shades of grey? What in the fucking hell... HOW? I mean, I watched John St. John reading 2 paragraphs from it on YouTube once. Is that it? How is that fucking relevant?
Bonus:
Skrillex? Popular with Daft Punk listeners? Where's my crowbar? Let me at 'em!

Actually a halfway-decent idle game. Nothing too crazy, but playable.

From the article : NanoCore runs only on Windows, so people visiting on machines running other operating systems were immune to the attack.

I never thought of fire as a hashing function... but it's an apt comparison.

There are several attacks, however, which allow reconstructing the original information if you're implementing this function wrong.

It's even possible to stop hashing before it completes.

Thanks! I'll be setting one of those up. I'm using an Untangle UTM at the moment but our requirements are outstripping it so I'm moving everything out into separate VMs. Some sort of ad blocking has been on my todo list.
