@dcon yeah, but it's 49"... assuming the pixels are square, a 4K the size of two of those would have a 54" diagonal. That would cost a little more...
Although, by my math, it has 81.4 DPI. Unless I'm sitting across the room, I think I'd prefer to have a smaller monitor with higher DPI.
-
@anotherusername 144hz is also a pretty nice feature.
-
@Magus I wouldn't pay much extra for it. I've never had any noticeable problems with bog standard 60 Hz displays.
-
@anotherusername The rare games that let me get up to 120hz on my monitor are a bit nicer. But really, it doesn't help much unless you play Quake or something.
Most people don't play games where above 60 helps much, but if you can do it, it looks better.

Back in the old CRT days, I simply could not work on 60Hz displays. Minimum I could stand was 72.

I found 60 OK provided it wasn't interlaced. But modern displays are much better as they don't have the flickering.

@dcon CRTs had a very noticeable flicker because each phosphor element in the display spent a lot of time in each refresh cycle displaying the color black, or very close to it. LCD displays have backlights which operate at high frequency, independently of the display's refresh rate; there is no flicker whatsoever introduced by the pixels being updated as the screen refreshes. The backlight operates at a high frequency, entirely independent of the display's refresh rate, so it shouldn't cause any perceptible flickering either, although cheap dimmer circuits can operate by blinking the backlight on and off at a low enough frequency to introduce a noticeable flicker. But that still has nothing to do with the display mode's refresh rate.

I watched the video. The girl has apparently spent some time stripping. She kept making him keep his hands at his sides.

Bonus joke time: This would never happen on United Airlines.

@anotherusername And yet if this was perceivable to you, you can imagine why a higher framerate would still be nicer today.

@Boner Interesting… The commenters all seem to think the article is genuine, and yet, at the bottom of the page, is this:
World News Daily Report assumes all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content.

Sounds like a Ryanair definition.

@coldandtired Ryanair in precision mode at that!
-
@RaceProUK People believe World News Daily articles now? This idiocracy thing is starting to hit a little too close to home.

University College London (UCL) is a "centre of excellence in cyber-security research", a status awarded by the GCHQ intelligence and monitoring service.
They may need to revisit that rating.

One week after he was declared missing, the sailor, 3rd Class Peter Mims, was found in the ship's engineering spaces, according to a U.S. official.
How in the world does
- Nobody notice that he's on board and
- He never notice that everyone's frantically searching for him
for an entire week?!?

@masonwheeler said in In other news today...:
everyone's frantically searching for him
Probably because it wasn't frantic. And what is thought of frantic is really a lot calmer than typical operations?

Perhaps for the same reason I named this file "pig4.jpg"
It's supposed to be the punchline to a bit about how the Big Bad Wolf never got to meet the fourth pig, after the three who built a House of Straw, a House of Sticks, and a House of Bricks.

The study found 48% of respondents weren’t sure where chocolate milk came from. Seven percent thought chocolate milk only comes from brown cows.
That adds up to about 16.4 million people, more than the population of Ohio.

@PJH I would totally give that answer if some dickhead cold called me at home and I had time to jerk him around.

@Boner That's almost as bad as the cultural appropriation!

I’ve spoken to contacts in the defense business and on the Hill, and all of them say the same thing: There is no $110 billion deal. Instead, there are a bunch of letters of interest or intent, but not contracts. Many are offers that the defense industry thinks the Saudis will be interested in someday. So far nothing has been notified to the Senate for review. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the arms sales wing of the Pentagon, calls them “intended sales.” None of the deals identified so far are new, all began in the Obama administration.
