People buy knockoff toys knowing they are knockoffs. The originals are too expensive.
We got given a Woody and Buzz Lightyear toy set from Hong Kong and they are not quite right.
FACT: Hollywood is massively influenced by the Chinese market these days. Huge ticket sales, and huge government subsidies. It's why, in the past few years, so many movies just so happen to have a few scenes in China. Especially blockbusters that are cash whores (looking at you Transformers, ID42...)
FACT: Hollywood is making Toy Story 4
THEREFORE: You've just accurately guessed the plot of Toy Story 4.

Also: Can't let a thread like this go without mentioning Phelous' "Bootleg Zones":
Including some favorites:
Mr. T Van (as in a van that is Mr. T)

The Evil Stick-- A child's toy that includes a picture of a girl-- well, watch the video

And of course, just for this forum: BIG COCK

@Lorne-Kates My Dad used to love his Evil Sticks. He had several, though not all of them were actually 'Evil Stick' or 'Wicked Wand' brand.
He would boast about how much they hurt, and how much he loved using them on his subs. All the time. To everybody. He would start up conversations with strangers in the street or at the supermarket about them, FFS. I really wish I could forget that shit, there are things no one should know about their parents' private lives, but to him, boundaries were meant to be crossed.
-
@ScholRLEA I was expecting that to go down the route of the jumper cables guy on reddit
-
@Jaloopa Given his love of Violet Wands and other types of electrical play, I am pretty sure the only reason it never did was because he never found anyone who was that much of a pain slut.
EDIT: Sorry, I assumed it was about applying the car battery's voltage to the guy's sensitive parts. The statement about not finding someone who was that much of a masochist still stands, though I am not sure if hitting someone with jumper cables ever crossed his mind. Knowing him, it probably did
-
@Zecc Why not.
With a fake one, you can reconstruct what it really looked like, without historians freaking out that you touched the original.
No... we have to keep it in it's dilapidated state... as it is.... with this exact amount of ruinedness.

A lot of the cachet of a designer brand comes from it being something that people aspire to have but (mostly) can't afford.
One of the things I'd do as SRoaC would be to make certain "luxury brands" exempt from trademarks. So you could make and sell perfect copies of Prada handbags, as long as people know they're copies. This would allow poor people to wear those brands, causing the original ones to completely lose their value.
(Hearing the company owners and the assholes who buy their products bitch about that would be so satisfying)
Second thing, reduce copyright laws so you anyone can sell merchandising of any series. Disney can own the rights to their movies (you know, since they actually take effort to produce) but not the right to Mickey Mouse figurines.

By that argument, anyone can make a Mickey movie, they just have to go and make their own.

That won't happen.
Prada are expensive because people demand expensive handbags.
Illegal copies already exist, and they haven't devalued Prada.

That's a horrible trait for a dom to have, and he's a shitty, shitty dom.

You can buy things like iPhone knock-offs for very little money, and people buy them knowing full well they’re not the real thing,¹ basically getting them in order to show off to their friends and passersby who might not notice it’s a copy. Still, those copies don’t reduce the prestige of a real iPhone.
¹ I‘m not talking about the kind sold in an attempt to pass them off as cheap real ones.

Sure.
-
@HardwareGeek You have no idea what that means! Trust me, I have only touched the tip of that fetid iceberg.
-
@Lorne-Kates Yeah. He couldn't keep a relationship going for more than a few months, because sooner or later he'd either forget the 'sane' or 'consensual' parts of SSC (and he wasn't always particularly scrupulous about 'safe', either), or they would realize that the term 'committed relationship' wasn't in his vocabulary. By the time he died, pretty much no one in the Atlanta fetish community would give him the time of day. Lovelife aside, this was not a good position to be in for someone making a living selling adult toys, especially if you are relying mainly on rapport and slick patter to make sales. He was a great salesman, but a painfully awful businessman, and worse, he was convinced he was the best businessman in the world.

You have my vote. A 5 year limit on copyright is alson one of the proposals from the pirate party IIRC

@anonymous234 I'm surprised Trump doesn't sell these himself. He's put his name on everything else.

@Jaloopa I think you're not allowed to wear that if you're not white...
https://what.thedailywtf.com/post/1021179
The real funny thing is that, since that's the first test on the chart, as soon as you're white, then this is entirely OK.
-
@remi I'm part of the human race. I can dress as any person
-
@remi So, the worst person I can try to be is Michael Jackson?
-
@Jaloopa Good point.
But you cannot dress as an alien (*) from a movie that got mixed reviews (and thus is "controversial" -- OK, that one is a bit far-fetched).
(*) not-from-Earth... we've already done this one before, I think.
-
@Onyx It's reasonably OK if you're not trying to be funny, and undefined (or NULL, or FILE_NOT_FOUND, or...) if you don't mind your picture being widely published.
Guys, I'm just reading the chart!

@remi OH BOY!
Thing / Idea
Does understanding your costume depend on an awareness of controversially current events or historically accepted cliches?
No
Low
Sweet, I can dress up as Vaginal Pear!
Let's try another:
Person
Is the person of your own race?
Yes
Low
Uh-oh, this seems to easy. I'm Canadian, and I'm thinking of something not Canadian, so let's just play it safe and revise my original answer.
Is the person of your own race?
No
Do you have to wear heavy makeup or a mask for this person to be recognizable?
No
Guarded: not immediately offensive
I know i haven't told you the costume yet, but still seems too easy. Okay, I can go with some horror makeup on this one, so "yes" to the heavy makeup thing.
Does this makeup or mask significantly chagne the color of your skin or the shape of your eyes, nose, lips or other facial features?
No
Guarded: not immediately offensive
Uhg, still? Well, fine, I could add some facial makeup too. Accentuate the nose, let's say. So yes.
Are you trying to be funny?
About this costume? No, not at all.
Elevated (Offense likely)
Now we're getting somewhere. But let's say I try to make this funny.
Is/Are the person/people you're mocking generally less powerful or more socially marginalized than you?
I'd love to say yes just for the rating, but this is as far as I can stretch it. So no.
High
: Very likely to offendYeah, I can see how making a FUNNY costume out of this is beyond the line. So I'm going to drop the humor-- and since I'm not really up to compromising, I'm taking away the facial makeup that i only added for the rating. And we're back to low.
Good to know. Low. I'm not going to offend anyone with my Auschwitz Prisoner cosutme!
-
@Lorne-Kates Reminds me of the time a friend put on reproduction WW2 Wehrmacht military fatigues, an authentic German WW2 gas mask (he was a fucking warrior and actually kept it on all night), slung an authentic WW2 German rifle over his shoulder... And then added a red armband.
He was horrified that we missed whatever obscure movie reference he was trying to make and got "Nazi" out of it.
Oh, and the party was at the Jewish guy's place.
