Now to do what a self-respecting journalist would do, note that Alexis was talking about political speech in that quote.

Fat shaming and whatever other garbage they ended up banning isn't political speech. Apparently the people in that particular thread have forgotten that the ultimate reason (at least the one given) why the fat shamers and other morons got themselves banned was because they refused to keep it in their subreddit and starting maliciously spamming other people's stuff too.

However, I do think the mass reddit population is partially correct in that they want to make more money off reddit and it is a lot easier to make money on something that isn't full of offensive tripe leaking all over the place.

I'm not sure what any of that has to do with this topic, which was about the firing of their IAmA coordinator. Should necro the fatshaming topic instead.

It drives me crazy that people treat pornography, etc, as the intended or primary reason for free speech and political speech as some kind of unintended consequence instead of the other way around.

she was the only technology executive anywhere who had the chops and experience to manage a startup of this size

I wasn't aware of anything in her history demonstrating that stuff, but TRWTF of this comment: She became CEO in 2014. Reddit started in 2005. I don't think they're a start-up any more.

  • Why did he bluescreen the captions under Kronk's chin? I mean... I appreciate the effort, but WHY!?

Are they actually making money or still relying on VC? Because if it's the latter...

  • I mean bluescreening them on the background so the captions are behind the characters, since they're easily readable, ok, fine. Great. Also easy to do.

But bluescreening the caption BETWEEN HIS PINK NECK AND HIS PINK CHIN is just amazingsauce. I wonder if his video editor has a tool to do that sort of thing, because goddamned, with my copy of Vegas I'd probably have to do it frame-by-frame. (That said, it's only overlapping over maybe a dozen frames...)

That looked like it was done with After Effects (judging by the dropping down letter effect), in which you can use animated masks controlled by camera-tracked points.

Edit: hard to motion-track points in that animation though, so it was probably animated by hand.

  • I've never used After Effects, so quite possible.

I'm still flabbergasted that someone spent the time to do it on this dumb joke animation.

  • Interesting facts from this article:

    1. Pao didn't fire Victoria Taylor, who did AMAs

    2. Alex Ohanian, who did, posted a mocking post with the "eating popcorn" meme after he fired Taylor

    3. Alex Ohanian was promoted

    4. Points 2 & 3, now that they are known, have not reduced the amount of disgusting misogynist and racist bullshit targeting Pao

Pao seems like a nasty piece of work, judging solely from her lawsuit. Having hopefully qualified that, it's always a bummer when you see things like misogyny happening to bad people, because the last thing you want is them to have unwarranted suffering piled onto the warranted stuff, if only because that means some moron's going to say it's all unwarranted.

  • I saw a lot of angry anti-Pao posts when the shit was happening and not one that was sexist or racist.

No, "chairman Pao" is obviously not racist. It's a pun on Mao and also to compare her "censorship" to the one on communist states (which is ridiculous, yes), just like the ones calling her Nazi. And I'm a bit annoyed that the article claims it is.

  • She also argued against the recent clampdown on certain subreddits.

    @anonymous234 said:

No doubt, just like with GamerGate/Anti-GG, a lot of people were throwing out those accusations to try to shut down the other side instead of having an actual discussion.

    1. She was the CEO, do it was ultimately her responsibility. She at least tacitly approved.

    2. Firing Victoria wouldn't have been a problem if the change was properly communicated and help offered to the people depending on her for running their subreddits.

    3. Once the riot started, Pao handled it poorly. She talked with the press instead of the mods. She negotiated in secret to bring the most popular subs back. By the time she tried addressing her community directly, it was too late.

    4. I keep hearing about these supposed racist and/or mysogynist attacks against Pao, but I have yet to see one. All the ones that reached me had focused on her lack of morality (spurious lawsuit, pension fund, firing a guy with cancer, shadow-banning detractors) and competence (zero communication, no clue how to use reddit).

As far as I can tell, she's still quite a bitch in her own right. It's just that she wasn't a bitch this time.

Misogynist and racist bullshit is one thing, but there was quite a lot of legit criticism of her over the time she was a CEO - and now it's all lumped together under "racist misogynist hate".

People didn't hate her and go trigger-happy to blame her because she was an Asian female - they did so because she had a horrible enough track record to be the first person to blame.

  • ♿ (Parody)

    @blakeyrat said:

I wouldn't call it borderline propaganda, but he got confused about where the racists are between Jesse Jackson and his critics.

Ordinarily, I'd  at stuff like this:

What can we learn from this, aside from what we already knew: that boards of directors tend to put female CEOs in charge in times of crisis because they predictably serve as useful lightning rods for backlash and hate?

But that's actually about the only plausible reason I could see for hiring Pao to begin with.

Some say that the “failure to meet growth goals” is a lie to cover that she’s actually leaving because of incessant harassment.

Oh, brother. She just lost a lawsuit about this. This seems like one of those times where one needs to recognize that if there are similar problems everywhere you go, maybe you are the problem.

Well duh, the death and rape threats are not okay. But they don't mean nobody's allowed to criticize her, nor that the world is divided into "people who are supporting her" and "people who threaten to rape and murder her".

And I don't frequent Reddit as much as @cartman82, but from what I've seen, top comments under the articles I've read were actual, legit critique (and maybe some jokes and usual vitriol). Not saying that there isn't anything less pleasant somewhere, but it's not all rape and murder.

How do you play Jeopardy in "a style that pissed people off"?

oh that's easy. just win, constantly, and act super smug about it.

  • The smug part might be the problem. Ken Jennings won a lot, but he's a really funny and likable guy so.

  • :belt_onion:

    By winning for one.

Actually the thing that pissed everyone off was that he would category jump to keep his opponents off balance. For whatever reason the hardcore jeopardy crowd thinks it is only civil to run single categories at a time, top to bottom or bottom to top - rather than jumping back and forth from one category to another.

But category hopping is a smart strategy, and Arthur Chu destroyed people with it. Ken Jennings himself even wrote an article about how Chu's strategy was a very good one.

I never got the feeling that he was smug, but he was kind of goofy. He reminds me of a friend I have, which probably lends to my not being so irritated by him or his attitude.
