Get this old video game / graphics card stuff out of the status thread

BTW, I dunno what that patcher does, but Wizardry 8 runs remarkably well in Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1. It also shows the old 3DFX spinning logo at a staggering 1080p, which is hilarious and amazing and awesome.
The only complaint I have is 800x600 resolution.

?
It runs in any resolution DirectX supports. I played it in 1080p, as I previously stated.

I meant the game, not logo.

I think you're missremembering.
-
Maybe tell it to use DX7 instead of Glide?
-
Why the fuck do you have it set to GLIDE? Are you in a timepod? Am I talking to 1997?

Maybe he's got an actual Voodoo 2.
-
Peasants. Even when I played Wizardry 8 the first time, I had a Voodoo 3.
EDIT: and note, don't worry, it still draws the amazing super-high-quality 3DFX logo even when you have the game set to DirectX.
-
I had a Voodoo 3.
It's been long enough I couldn't remember if there was a 3 before they went under.
-
There was briefly a 5, IIRC. Like about a month before they went under. (I don't recall there being a 4.)
It sucked, I really liked 3DFX as a company.
-
Looks like there was a 4:
-
I remember really really wanting a Voodoo 3 but I was like 13 and unable to convince my parents why they should buy me it.
-
"I don't recall there being a 4" is not the same thing as "there wasn't a 4".
So if you're trying to be "OMG I R SO SMJRTER THAN BLAKERYAT!!!" then it's not working. If you're trying to be, "I'm Mr. Wizard and here's some free schooling, kids" then it's annoying as shit.
-
Or, I was helping remind you that there was a 4

Taking it that way would be a to making such... entertaining posts.

I didn't ask and I don't really care.

That seems to be the best option (using some kind of wrapper). OpenGL doesn't even work. Also, 800x600 limit doesn't change whatever I pick.
Either way, I'm done with this. This expansion is bullshit, you start in some crappy looking "Heaven", with Marry Sue NPC-s and fanfiction level dialogue. There was NO indication in the docs this was a custom campaign. I feel cheated.

Why don't you just play the regular game?
Look, I've played in 1080p in the CD version and the Steam version, so I know it works (it even supports 16:9 aspect ratios). Maybe I set a value in a config file somewhere and I simply don't remember it. But the game works.
I'm reinstalling it right now just to call you an idiot, I hope you're happy.

I already did. I need something extra to justify the replay.

Always a good reason to do things.

I'd be more surprised if you had. NOBODY CAN TAKE MY CROWN AS "PERSON WHO FINISHED WIZARDRY 8 WITHOUT CHEATING!"
Anyway, turns out you need something named nglide:
At least that's what the Steam copy uses in place of the game's default monitor picker thing.

Tilt at that windmill, Sisyphus!

3DFX blew everything else out of the water in the Voodoo 1-3 days.
The problem is that with the Voodoo 3 and newer, 3DFX decided to stop selling chips to other manufacturers and instead make their own cards and sell them directly.
Go figure that Creative Labs1 and other vendors that sold graphics cards would turn to other manufacturers in the same sector.
If anything, 3DFX is the reason nVidia became a powerhouse in 3D graphics cards... because 3DFX handed the entire third-party market to nVidia.
(Note: ATI realized this was the way to go a few years later.)
1Yes, the maker of Sound Blaster used to sell video cards. As I recall, they were one of the largest sellers of the Voodoo 2 cards.

Remember Diamond Multimedia?
They funded a Tribes team and a couple servers for it. The DMM guys played like jerks, we always hated them.
(Tribes is a gentleman's game. They played like Quake players, i.e. apes.)
