Somewhat contrived, especially the last, but all could be correct depending on context.

That one is wrong. With “grocers' apostrophes” you've got several grocers with multiple apostrophes between them. You were trying to write “Grocers's”. Really.

It's a simple rule, but it's one based on grammar.

No. I most certainly wasn't - I was most careful about that. Either may be stylistically correct (depending on which style your're following, of course) for proper names.
