  • Sorry for picking the scab so late but I wanted to be on a proper keyboard so I could hammer away a bit harder. This also meant that I started wondering whether it was worth the effort to post at all, but since I am partially to blame for starting this, here goes.

    I doubt that it will make a difference, though.

    The problem I have with "shit on this forum" is that I have found myself holding back even when I had something to contribute to a discussion because it's not worth the effort. You will not listen, and all that will happen is that I'll get a pile of shit heaped on me and be called an idiot. Mind you, this was, at first, not a conscious decision of mine but more of a subconscious conditioning, but the net result was the same: Rather than seriously engaging in meaninful discussions, I stopped posting anything with any actual content.

    This is what I expressed in a thread elsewhere on this forum when your latest antics were vented. The end result of this discussion was that @boomzilla had a chat with you (which was his decision (which I support) and not something anyone urged him to do). As far as I am concerned, this was all there was to it. Until now.

    I am not sure whether you actually read the forum, but the only person here that immediately resorts to name-calling is you. The rest of us are able to hold quite extensive and heated debates without ever calling the others idiots, morons, numbskulls, or whatever else your limited vocabulary recycles. I do not find your abuse funny, and I do not think it has anything to do with discussing "curious perversions in information technology", but to each his own and I have simply not cared enough to say anything about it before.

    Somewhere in this thread you wrote "I only post what people want to read anyway" (I won't bother discoquoting it for you). How do you know? As you are so wont to point out, you are not telepathic! Have you noticed that the moment you get engaged in a discussion most of us quietly leave, and only a few remain? Have you noticed that you are the only one with your very distinctive abusive argumentation style, and even the people who respond to you are polite and to the point? While not conclusive evidence to support that people do not want to read your vulgarities, it is certainly interesting, isn't it?

    Regarding your invitation to "TALK TO ME" (shouting sic): thanks but no thanks. You have spent almost a decade consistently being a jerk and insulting everyone the moment they talk back to you. It's like a ten year old two-year-old temper tantrum. I am not telepathic and have no means of knowing that you will not just continue shitting in my face if I take this up with you. In fact, most evidence points towards that this is exactly what is going to happen. Either @blakeyrat is a persona, in which case any insult is highly intentional and talking to you is not going to change anything, or you are a psychopath, in which case talking to you is not going to change anything. Let me express this as a simple prisoner's dilemma for you:

    |                        | Send a PM  | Do not send a PM |
    | Blakey is a psychopath | more abuse | abuse            |
    | Blakey is a persona    | more abuse | abuse            |

    This has nothing to do with cowardice, it is a matter of effort and expected results.

    One idiot doth not a forum make, and there are plenty of other, better reasons for coming here than to watch your uninteresting, unintelligent, and unfunny attempts at trolling. But, coming back to my original point, your writing style prevents a, to me, more meaningful exchange of ideas.

    As for your claim to forum ownership based on seniority: I posted my first usenet post in 1986 on a 600-baud modem. I hosted my own BBS and a FidoNet node in 1987. I wrote my first communications stack in 1991. I browsed the web using Gopher and Archie in 1992. I think I can safely say "Wipe your nose and get off my internet!"

    +1 for explaining the exact reason I never post anything meaningful here so eloquently.

    -1 because blakeyrat is by far not the only one here destroying serious discussions. He is to blame, but he's by far not the only one. Maybe we should have a category for serious discussions? Something like Coding Help, where most people do not troll/abuse others?

  • What I like about this community is that we can have a discussion, a debate, without much taboo, without being overly "politically correct", without tiptoeing around fuckers that can be easily "triggered" or easily "offended" and so on. That sweet feeling of freedom.

    On the other hand, if someone even in a mostly-relaxed community does little, and is notorious for doing little but continuously hurling shit at everyone else, they are the best candidate for some parking lot therapy.

    In other words, grow a fucking sense of proportion, you little shit, will you. Yes, you fucking know who you are, you dumb motherfucker.

    It generally works both ways IME. I have seen similar things on slashdot, where people with one view sees the forum as mainly biased against them (Apple vs non, MS vs Linux, left vs right vs libertarian, etc). It's apparently informed by confirmation bias.

    Now, I'm sure I was in your mind while writing this. Let me just say that I really like to get into serious discussions about stuff, and we often get out of that zone for various reasons. I'll also state (and I think have done so in the past) that I generally try not to let little negative assumptions go by without comment, because as a larger cultural phenomenon, they often sit around unanalyzed and IMO are just as often wrong.

    Reasonable people (and us here at TDWTF) can disagree, but what sounds to me like lazy slander is going to get called out. And I can think of instances where I'm sure things I've said have sounded that way to other people. So sure, call me out, ask me more about why I said it. I love to talk about this stuff, especially with people who disagree.

    I also make an effort not to hold a grudge and to come to each discussion fresh, or at least to separate the flamewars / trolling / serious questions by topic as much as possible.

    I wouldn't know; I feel like this isn't the kind of place I want to get into politics, religion, or whatnot, so I generally mute a thread when it goes there. If I didn't I'd probably appreciate the effort though :) The beginnings of the discussions, and the times when I decide to lurk because something looks interesting and then later regret it, lead me to believe that my opinions would not be welcome, so I don't post. There's only so much sniping at groups you belong to a person has to see to realize they shouldn't speak up.

    Without wanting to sound too fanboish, I have to agree with blakey here.
    Being called a fucking moron who can't read and has a small penis on this forum is the equivalent to "sorry mate, I'll have to respectfully disagree with your opinion on that point" in other forums. And I find that quite refreshing. I have to deal with enough PC pseudo-polite bullshit in my real life (and in other forums and communities as well).
    Does it get repetitive sometimes? Of course it does. But sex is also quite repetitive and I still like it.

    Anyone feeling personally offended by that or deciding not to make a contribution here because of the responses he might get is a fucking moron with a small penis.
    It's just words on the internet, people. Have a little fun.

    There was always a population ready to engage in this sort of stuff. Was it always cool to act that way toward people who weren't interested in that?

    I love me a good shout fest, but I try not to shout at people who can't or just don't want to handle it. It's not about being abusive to people to shut them up, but verbally sparring with other people interested in the same thing. I think there's room for both on here.

  • Dunno, you have a longer tenure, but AFAIR when someone was being an idiot it was acceptable to call them an idiot.

    I don't remember any issues on the old forums with someone being grossly offended.

    @Maciejasjmj said:

    There's a difference between an immediate response to the present situation, and a persistent and unrelenting attitude; some feel that it's moved from the former to the latter. For what it's worth, I think it's in the middle somewhere; it's getting uncomfortable, but it's also controllable.
    @Maciejasjmj said:

    There probably were one or two of those (law of averages and all that), but you just don't remember them ;)

    When someone is actually being an idiot, I have no problem calling them out on it (even if I would choose a more creative insult). Just calling someone an idiot, or other derogatory terms, without having a fresh -- and reasonably accurate -- cause for it is not ok.

    I do not care about what was acceptable or not in the past. I am here now, and prefer to participate in making the forums a place I wish to stay in now. (INB4: of course this implies a give and take from both sides).

    If it's consistent, then fair enough; it's when it's a persisted treatment even when the receiver hasn't shown signs of idiocy for considerable time that it's not really fair.
