📥 Why: All outgoing email has been globally disabled by an administrator?

  • SockDev

All outgoing email has been globally disabled by an administrator. No email notifications of any kind will be sent.

Anyone know why this has appeared suddenly?

  • Fake News

Maybe @PJH wants to show off?

  • Or the server cooties that we've been having could have been fucking with them so they were disabled. Dunno, I don't use them so can someone who does see if there was a blowup?

  • SockDev

The notification appeared before the cooties hit…

  • I was using a sockpuppet to spam myself and generate infinite emails.

  • Does it need to have the same prominence as the read-only mode banner? I don't think it matters nearly as much to anyone.

  • @xaade said:

Oh, were you the source of the server cooties then?

  • SockDev

my best guess right now is it's related to @ben_lubar update script. that maybe it was flipped while importing so that the server doesn't spew massive amounts of spam emails as the old forum history is loaded.

  • area_deu

Even to people who want to, say, create an account or change the password?

  • SockDev

    That would explain…
    *sunglasses*
    Everything

  • BINNED

I guess they probably don't want to try right now 😛

Seriously though, I had only a few posts on the old forums, but imagine the horror that would unleash on inboxes of people who were active there.

  • SockDev

    @aliceif said:

i think it only applies to notifications?

  • SockDev

I have a bit over 200 on the old forum.

Or, as it should be known now, about 3 days activity… 😒

  • You Shall Not Pass

  • @aliceif said:

That's alright - I don't get those emails from here to my gmail account anyway; they get lost...

    It's ok. I KeePass.

  • ... anyway, not guilty, and /admin/logs doesn't feel like showing any changes to, and who made them to, that setting...

  • belgium hobbits. They get into everything.

  • SockDev

that i think just strenghtens my conviction that it is @ben_lubar's fault. 😛

  • @aliceif said:

That's a great reason to put it on the "create new account" or "reset password" page, along with disabling the button which I bet they don't do. But if we're logged in and reading the forum, chances are we don't need to create or reset, and having the banner sticking around at the top of the topic list is noise.

It's a terrible place to have the banner whether it's useful or not. If it's something we need to know about, it should be prominent and fixed so that it's always visible, or at least visible when it's relevant (e.g. read-only banner in the reply box).

  • I wonder if it is related to this:

  • Speaking of useful and relevant:

    Here's how to improve it:

  • BINNED

I'm also trying to click it all the time because it look the same as "X updated topics" banner.

Yes, I know, different positioning. My reflexes care not for such details.

  • area_deu

They should maybe heatmap the banners by severity …

  • Notification Spam Recipient

I'm getting an invalid certificate issue when clicking the link. Even https://meta.discourse.org/ doesn't work. Is it just me?

I always check the stupidest reason for this to happen first: is the date on your computer set properly?

  • Are other https websites working for you?

  • @PJH said:

And who's updating the site now? 😦

It's not me - I just woke up. Probably @InedoJohn.

The email disabling thing is part of the main import script:

  • Who cares? You assholes were just using the email feature to spam me anyway.

  • SockDev

You mean the feature you can just turn off oh why am I even bothering of course you didn't turn it off because you're more interested in complaining rather than doing something that makes sense…

Actually, it's a good thing I remembered about those settings; reminded me to turn them off. It's not like I ever received any anyway…
