Sony PS3 WTF

  • Apparently, the console with "more processing power and capability than any consumer electronics device in history" is incapable of upsampling 720p to 1080i for those (most?) of us who have HDTVs that don't natively support 720p or 1080p. So if you have a CRT-based HDTV, you're screwed. Thanks for that, Sony! Time to buy a 360 and a Wii

  • Hmmmm... My CRT HDTV does 720p

  • I was going to get a Wii all along, reckon the control system will be quite cool with certain games.  This bit in the link confused me somewhat:

"The PlayStation 3's competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360, does upscale 720p games to 1080i if the HD set supports the latter resolution but not the in-between and commonly-employed 720p resolution"

  • That sentence isn't worded that well - it should read something like:

If the HD set supports 1080i but not 720p then the 360 will upscale a 720p game to 1080i, unlike the PS3 which would downscale it to 480p.

It also points out that 720p is a resolution which is very common nowadays

I very much doubt this.  What model is it?  Some CRT HDTVs accept 720p signals, but they will resample it to either 1080i or 480p.

The Wii only supports 480i and 480p.

I wouldn't be surprised if a later firmware revision allowed the PS3 to scale 720p to 1080i anyway.

Not the point. The point is that the PS brand is known for providing games with powerful graphics (like the XBox brand) and games with weaker graphics but innovative gameplay (like Nintendo's consoles).  Since you can get a 360 and a Wii for the price of a PS3, and the 360 will provide for all your beautiful FPS and RPG needs while the Wii will give you all the innovative gameplay, the combination is a viable alternative to a PS3.

True. Also, perhaps by the time the firmware is updated the console will be available to those willing to pay less than $10,000 on eBay. That'll be exciting.

  • The Real WT(tm) is how completely Sony surrendered launch-day initiative to Microsoft and Nintendo.  Looking through yesterday's newspaper ads, every store that sells consoles advertised the Xbox360.   Almost all of them advertised the Wii and the Nintendo DS.  One of them even advertised the PSP and Playstation 2.  Nobody advertised the Playstation 3 -- it's almost as if the console hadn't come out.

    Did they need to advertise?

  • What's the practical difference advertising or not advertising something you don't have? I would mostly assume that this is because the stores know there just won't be enough profit in advertising the scant few they do get.

That's the point: the Wii is in sufficient supply that it's worth advertising.  The Xbox360 is in sufficient supply to be worth advertising.  The PS3 is so rare that launch-day hype is going to go mainly into increasing the sales of the Xbox360 and Wii.

  • on the bright side of things, I heard they are pretty tough consoles :¬)

I have been unsuccessful so far in my quest for a Wii. I think it'll look great next to my 360 and GameCube....

On another topic, I have yet to find any games that my wife will play with me on the 360 but we have lots of fun with the GameCube.... yet another reason to get a Wii and not a PS3.

  • I might retire my gamecube since I heard the Wii will play cube games as well as use its controllers, think I'll wait and see how the backwards compatibility goes first though after hearing how the other "next gen" consoles flopped with it...

It doesn and is perfectly compatible with every GC game. Even the FreePlayer works.

There are only two limitations: you need GC controllers (WaveBird works btw, but you NEED the receivers), and you need GC save cards (you can't map them to the console's memory or an SD card, which is slightly retarded).
