Your posting is a barrier to my reading

  • So I currently have New(38) and Unread(39) and, since I joined a month ago, have not been able to get them down to a more reasonable level. I've decided to start ignoring things, but I wasn't sure what to ignore. For those of you without unlimited time (i.e. not accalia, RaceProUK, boomzilla, etc.) like myself, what do you actively choose to ignore and not read?

  • I generally read the first post or two of any new topics that sprouts up whose title doesn't seem too needlessly uninteresting.
I then keep reading topics that contain interesting stuff that I like and stop reading topics that contain uninteresting stuff that I dislike.
I also take a peek in topics I'm not actively following from time to time to see if they got derailed into anything interesting, though that's becoming less of an opportunity with the anti derail force.

    It's a pretty complex system.

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

    Ignore One Post.

Also the Likes and Status threads.

    Also threads with flamewars.

That'll make it real quiet around here :)

  • Winner of the 2016 Presidential Election

I tend to ignore all topics with more than 100 posts unless I remember them being interesting. Mainly because the topic changes every 5 posts anyway.
I usually read all the new topics like @CreatedToDislikeThis to see where they are heading.
I like reading One Post, Bug and Meta... because they can become pretty interesting.

Filed Under: I am reading this topic right now...

  • What about Article topics?

  • Winner of the 2016 Presidential Election

I read them because they usually explain stuff I didn't understand in the article...

Filed Under: yes, I am sometimes that stupid

  • @IngenieurLogiciel said:

    What about Article topics?

it always takes me a few moments to remember this is a forums for an article website whenever I encounter those.

  • I'm considerably further behind than you are. I tend to ignore, or at least postpone reading, any topic with more than about 20 or so unread posts because they'll take too long to read. I intend to read them all, but I know that, realistically, I'll probably never get around to them. I do keep up with Likes and Status, but I rarely post in Likes any more, and I barely read the posts as I like them.

  • I ignore those, unless there's something I don't understand then I might check the post to see if there's an explanation.

  • In the morning, I read the most interesting-looking 5-6 topics, then hit "Mark as Read" on all the others.

Rinse and repeat the next day.

Also judicious use of the "mute" button.

There's articles on this site? Huh!

Seriously though, they get treated the same as any other topic.

One thing I forgot to mention: if you come back after an hour and a topic has like 68 new posts, they're all utter garbage and don't bother reading them. 90% of the time this means Accalia and one or more of her furry fandom has just shat all over the thread, ruining it forever.

  • I try to hit /new every few hours and open anything which seems interesting, just to get it into /unread. From there, I generally have two or three tabs open so I can slog through the unread threads, using PgDn as necessary. I also have one tab open to handle notifications. I try to stay on top of songs and status, and some of the slower moving ones, but I'm probably going to admit defeat on some eventually...

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Hah. I'm fairly certain he doesn't have unlimited time, like myself.

I just speed-read/skim certain threads, but I do see every post.

But understanding that most people don't want/need to read every 'public' post made - suggestions for general categories:

    • One Post - was set up mainly for testing stuff, which is why threads there close after an hour. Anything of note that starts there and continues after an hour (i.e. is re-opened) gets shifted to a more appropriate category. Safe to ignore.
    • Bugs - self explanatory. If you're not interested in the 'under the hood' stuff that goes on around here, probably safe to ignore.
    • Flags/Badges - meta-stuff about the forum specifically about gamification. If you're not that interested in that stuff, ignore.
    • Programmers Testing + Bots testing - playground for those interested in the bots running here, and other members' pet projects . Again, if not that interested in that sort of thing, ignore.

    Special mentions:

    • Meta - discussion about the forum itself, though most get derailed at some point. Usually somewhere around post #2. If less than (say) 100 posts, read the first 10 or so to see if it's interesting, base a decision on that. If greater than 100 and it keeps growing, check back every 250 posts or so and repeat to see if the topic's changed.
    • General - catch all category for stuff that doesn't really fit anywhere else - use the same algorithm as Meta.

I get the impression that the other categories tend to generate less traffic, so you could probably get away with reading them all.

  • @PJH said:

What doesn't? Although most of the Funny Stuff topics seem to either die or wander back onto the rails fairly quickly.

  • I barely skimmed this topic.

    Depends on the article, really.
I try to read most, but I couldn't be bothered to follow the whole "how much water flows through the Amazon" thread.
Fridays often have funny or interesting posts.

Makes sense. By Friday the descent into madness is complete, even for the most composed of us.

  • Click on New tab and check through all the sidebar and general threads. If there's too much crap in a thread, you can actually click the "summarize" option, to see the most liked stuff. Otherwise, just skim & skip and try to keep up as best as possible.

  • @cartman82 said:

    and possibly mute the topic

  • Less than half of this forum is readable/vaguely interesting and the rest is garbage ( flags/badges - WTF, seriously who has time for this!?). Thanks to this post I've now realised how I can actually mute all this garbage.

    Cheers!
