Map of quietest places in the USA released
-
A noise map has been created that shows the loudest and quietest places in the USA.
Unsurprisingly it's pretty much just a population map.
As soon as I read the headline I knew it would just be a population map. Did nobody on the research team question why they were wasting their time on this? Surely they could have been doing something more constructive that had less obvious results...

Does that mean we've answered the thing about trees when no one's around?
-
I take it all back, it was totally not a waste of time, as long as we can shut those philosophical fuckers up ;-)

And the sound of one hand clapping is cl or ap, depending which hand it is

I'd like to see a heatmap of how many people like looking at population maps.

Because they were looking for cases where it may not have followed the population so strictly? Surprises happen, and you need to gather data to rule them out...

Well, not really, because there's nothing for it to clap against..

I expected Florida to be in bright orange. I mean, it's full of Latins1 and we are pretty loud.

Depends on
- who was paying for the research,
- why, and
- who was getting paid, and
- how much...
5 minutes searching provided no satisfactory answers.

"PHB is paying me to do this stupid research that's got no practical value at all. I'll just pull a population breakdown chart, mess with the colours and nip off to the pub for a week on pretext of research. Sorted!"
.... sounds about right.

This reminds me of the "10 Most Stolen Cars" list that comes out every year and always has the Honda Civic and Ford F-150 near the top. If they would only correct for the number on the road, then the list would be so much more useful.
