Continuing the discussion from These Threads show that I am high on systemd-statusd:
Fuck not e-filing in 2015?Wait... e-file isn't literally digital fax is it?<s>Fuck not e-filing in 2015?
Wait... e-file isn't literally digital fax is it?</s>
I read faxes as taxes, inb4 flag.

blank line forces paragraph tag and discourse (or browser, but pretty sure discourse) autocloses tags on paragraph.
-
What's happened is the blank line means your post was separated into distinct
<p>
blocks, and the<s>
was auto-closed as a result.

Not helped by the fact that the cooker is server-side and written in Ruby (IIRC), and the preview is client-side and written in JavaScript.
-
Supposedly the code running server-side to deep fry the posts and the code running client-side to do the needful are the same. Both in JS.
For a Discourse definition of the same, of course.

the cooker is server-side and written in Ruby

The server ninjas in
width
andheight
parameters for all the images post-oneboxing in the post-processing, and it has to use a XML parser to do that, which is what's causing the tags to close, I think.
