There are no shortcuts to the perfect sound. [was Accalia needs a new set of headphones. Suggestions?]

  • SockDev

So @accalia has been using a pair of Klipsch Image One BT headphones and has been very happy with them.

Unfortunately they are breaking in a way that is impossible to repair long term (plastic stress fracture and poor design) @accalia is patching with superglue periodically to extend the life but it's time she started looking for new headphones and so wants suggestions.

    @accalia's requirements

    • Must support being wired (work machines have "security" software that fracks up bluetooth. it's an acknowledged bug(acknowledged in 2010, still unfixed))
    • Must be over the ear type (not earbud, @accalia is using these at work and needs to "advertise" when she can't hear you)
    • Must have good sound. not be crap $4.99 headphones.
    • Also supporting bluetooth connection is a nice bonus

What does the dailyWTF suggest for @accalia?

  • area_deu

  • SockDev

that would advertise alright.... does kind of defeat the purpose of wearing headphones at work in the first place though. (@accalia will be getting a pair of those, but not for work)

    Seriously.

yes, seriously. @accalia thinks they are funny.

although @accalia will make damn sure that the external speakers are able to be turned off when they aren't wanted.

but we are drifting a bit from the purpose of this thread. can we try to keep it on topic for at least 24 hours please? ;-)

I am currently wearing Superlux HD681 headphones. Bought them when I needed cheap headphones (you can get them for 20 bucks) and I am fine with them.
They don't support bluetooth but the cable is seperate, allowing for buying a cheap cable in case this one breaks.
I can't really say anything about quality. They are Headphones and according to amazon critiques the quality is good. But my ears apparently don't care.

    98 db SPL
    32 Ohm
    10-30.000 Hz
    300 mW

if those numbers help. Google the headphones yourself if you are interested. I copied them from a german website and am too lazy to google american equivalents.

Filed Under: Is mentioning yourself this often meant to break Discourse?

Addendum: Am I the only one who at least tried to reply seriously? Am I missing something here? Is this a hoax?

I use these Sennheiser headphones (or rather, the previous generation of that model) and they're pretty good. Can't stand to have them on for more than 2–3 hours at a stretch, but that's not usually a problem unless I'm in one of the more noxious telecons that happens round here…

I have no idea about bluetooth adapters, but I suspect you won't get normal wired and bluetooth in a single device.

that's one of the reason i like my current model. it supports both BT and wired. I'l admit it's not going to be a common setup, but it is a very nice :+1: when it shows up.

These have both Bluetooth and wired:

They use a 2.5mm jack (there's a 3.5mm -> 2.5mm cable included, plus a random assortment of other adapters). Besides the price (unless you find them somewhat discounted somewhere), I can recommend them. The noise cancelling works decently and is nice on occasion. There's a pass-through function that I've found rather useless (taking off the headphones when talking to someone isn't that much of an inconvenience, and seems a bit nicer to the person you're talking to) -- I suppose it's great if you need to covertly listen in on surrounding discussions, though.

  • SockDev

    @cvi said:

    Besides the price

    *cough*

that's an expensive set of headphones....

a bit more than i was planning on spending really.

still that feature set is tempting.... ;-)

  • Sennheiser headphones are really worth the price. I used a pair (HD 280 pro) once in a professional recording studio, and I liked them so much I bought one for myself. Excellent sound, and an excellent way to tell co-workers to go away.

  • The perspective in that picture is messing with me. My brain is insisting it's zooming in and out as I scroll.

  • I have two recommendations in the 100 USD range: one is the Sennheiser HD 280s, and the other are the current gen of the Grado SR-80 (currently the SR-80e).

I like the sound of the Grados slightly more, but they do almost nothing to actually block sound. If all you need to do is advertise you're busy and provide distraction, they're good; if you want to actually block sound, then the Senns are where it's at.

Of course, that's only one price range, and it's not like I've sampled others.

  • @cvi said:

    noise cancelling

Please don't. At least not in my vincinity. My experience says that people with headphones are notorious mouth breathers, let alone with noise- cancelling ones.

Other than that, I have a pair of cheap Sennheisers (HD-201) and they're good enough for me, but I have a wooden ear, so make of it what you will. Also Phillips SHB-4000, but those are Bluetooth only and have an annoying flashing light.

  • I would recommend Sennheiser in general. What genres of music do you listen to? What range do you want emphasized (High/Mid/Low)? Or do want monitor (flat) headphones? Also, do you want on-ear or around-the-ear?. I greatly prefer around-the-ear.

I am currently using these at work:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005N8W1Q0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=29K5P0TYVF5FF&coliid=I320GOHUA0NOSK.

My criteria for picking them was somewhat decent sound and build quality for a cheap price since I leave them at work and they could grow legs. They work for me, but if I were to use them more might look at something in Sennheiser's Pro line for a bit more ruggedness.

Yes, seriously i'm mostly a music omnivore. i'll happily listen to anything (other than Country which i consider not-music)

    @jaming said:

    ???

no audiophile here. i just know that $4.99 headphones sound like crap, beyond that.... i dunno, that's rather why i'm asking for suggestions.

    @jaming said:

i prefer around the ear, but i'm flexible. The only reason why i rejected earbuds is the fact i want to advertise my listening to music status.

  • My current favorite:
    http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/pc-headsets/ear-force-px21/48

    1. it uses that netting earpads. Most comfortable ever. Why the hell pleather is still a thing for headphones, I'll never know.
    2. True over the ear. None of this, pad rests on ear because designer thought over the ear for toddler sized ears. Padding rests on scalp, and I have big ears. Oval shaped. I don't know why so many are circle shaped; those kind rest on ears + don't actually fit shape of ear. Most of those are for the music profession, which raises question why music profession don't know how to make headphones for ears.
    3. Good sound quality. Uses USB for microphone, but not required. Works fine just using the microphone port for all devices.
    4. Has that extra pad at the top of the head. Keeps from sliding off.
    5. As a bonus, works with consoles.

  • @accalia said:

It's really ironic. For "country" music to be so annoying, it's direct ancestor led to almost the majority of modern music today.

  • SockDev

that may be influenced by the 6 years i spent working as a cashier in a retail clothing store that only played country music.... ;-)

those headphones look awesome though. will have to look into them

  • If you want comfort. I've tried everything. Literally everything, at multiple outlets, stores, etc.
Even the high end $300 headphones aren't as comfortable.

  • After looking at Japanese advertising only, I would have to assume one of the following of Japanese culture (all of which I know are false).

    1. Japanese people die after 20.
    2. Japanese people have found the fountain of youth and never age past 20, and die looking 20.
    3. Japanese people don't mature past 20
    4. And even if they look older than 20, they never display people
over 20 to the outside world.
    5. Japanese people over 20, never buy anything. Or, they are so wrapped up in business performance, they only ever buy white shirt and tie, or suits, and those don't need to be advertised.

From experience in being in China, and Chinatown, etc. Oriental people don't actually have kids. They clone their children from age 12. I've never seen a toddler in a store.

  • And how many older-looking people do you seen in western advertising again?

  • I see 30 to 40 all the time.

I think it is more that white people age faster

Ah, well, you could try western instead of country.

  • We play both kinds of music here...Country, and Western.

  • I wear a pair of these every day. They do Bluetooth, wired with 3.5mm jack, and playing music from a MicroSD card. I've been using them for over a year, with no noticeable wear so far. Comfort and sound quality is good, and plenty loud enough to drown out whatever is going on around you. I was actually thinking of getting another pair for home, so I don't keep forgetting them every time I bring them home.
