Facebook email, a lesson in how to not put any information in an email
-
So, I'm not sure when they decided to do this, but Facebook has now completely removed any relevant information from their "update" emails. You need to click "View" to see the text of the status, making the email completely worthless...
Case in point:
Now, hillariously (?) enough, they include a tiny bit of text in the email's subject line ("Foo updated his status: something something something... "). But, to actually get to any information, you need to click Facebook.
Well, there goes any off-chance reading of statuses you might have caused. GG Facebook, GG.

I turned Facebook emails off pretty much straight away.
Like here, when I want to see what's going on, I'll just check it.
-
I'd say making you go on their website is easier for reading your data and also actually shows you advertisement. So there is that.

I turned off Facebook emails after I started getting the "this person you went to school with and haven't interacted with since friending them just posted a new status. Like they do 10 times a day" and "for some reason you haven't logged in to our wonderful site in a week. Here's the unimportant stuff you missed" emails. I should probably see if I can turn on just message notifications, since checking them is pretty much the only reason I ever sign in these days
-
I never login. I have the Facebook messenger app on my phone and that informs me if someone sent me a message. I can reply via that as well.
No ads and no seeing posts I don't care about.

When I want to see what's going on on Facebook, I'll check it too.
I don't have an account there at all.

I looked at the required permissions and noped out. I use Fast for Facebook on my phone, which is a bit limited but lets me see and read messages. If I need to do anything more I do it in an incognito tab on the desktop.
I'm probably overly paranoid, but Zuckerberg ain't getting any more of my data than necessary
-
Once you look into it, the required permissions aren't as bad as they sound.
EDIT: And I never understood why people complained about the permissions when Messenger became its own app, when the same people already had Facebook installed which has the same list of permissions.

Yeah this. Some site (XDA? I'm at work and cba to find it) said it's fairly run-of-the-mill as far as permissions are... Of course, TRWTF is Android's global and non-granular permissions scheme (thank $diety for app ops/CM12 privacy guard), but that's a discussion for another day... Oh, you want to check the network state to see if you're connected to wifi or not? Why don't we give you access to all phone related functions while we're at it!!!!!!
I don't really check Facebook (ever)... The emails were about the only way I ever saw my friends' statuses. Oh well, guess I won't even do that. Thankfully Inbox lets me just throw those emails away if there's nothing interesting really quickly... Check whole Social category, mark done
i am glad i'm not on there anymore..... i hate that place....

I do too, but you can get some interesting HUMINT by just perusing from time to time. Plus I need to post things to my modteam's page sometimes... Those are the only reasons I ever log on...

I looked at Facebook yesterday. I'm now officially old. My entire feed is baby pictures

Yes, agreed there.

Well, actually, the network and phone permissions are separate but it has access to both. The phone functions are because you can make phone calls from it.
I know what you mean though.

Isn't Wifi status under phone state? I'm probably wrong, never worked on that specific end (My only permission on my apps is android.INTERNET) but I thought WiFi connectivity was a phone-state permission.

Maybe the Samsung control panel groups them differently - Wifi is under "Network Communication" and Phone-related things are under "Phone calls" on my S5.
