One of the courses I took as a Math major was "Mathematical Writing", and it was basically a "how to write proofs" course. THAT is what we need to be folding into the mathematics curriculum -- frequent and unavoidable contact with the single most fundamental tool of the mathematical thinker.

If by doing it wrong you mean "probably was, at best, related tangentially to the mathematical domain". It wasn't an essay-length thing, but it was still a writing requirement injected into a math course; it was not even close to a piece of the course that just happened to involve writing. Pretty much the entire point was to prepare students to pass the "Florida Writes!" portion of the FCAT.
But yeah, an actual formal logic and/or proofs class would've been awesome to have.

Over here, any fixed speed cameras are well signed (you have warning there's one coming up. In other states, you have the same pattern of 3 different signs immediately before one). Mobile cameras are in a van or 4x4 on the side of the road, so again easy to spot.

In my tiny state and the much larger enclosing state fixed and mobile cameras are well signed. Some states hide them. Victoria is good for hiding both fixed and mobile cameras.
Fixed cameras may be hidden behind road signs on overhead gantries, or attached to bridges with no signs. They aren't always on their own poles which would make them easier to spot. As a visitor to the state it's difficult to know where they are.
Mobile cameras are in unmarked vehicles or hidden between parked vehicles or rubbish bins waiting for collection or anywhere else they please.
They also have a speed margin of just 3km/h, way under federal guidelines and below the accuracy of Australian speedometers. That's just a technical objection because speedometers all read over not under but the Victorian government are still dicks.
Many "road safety" cameras in Victoria take a photograph of the front of the vehicle, not the rear. Motorcycles in Australia do not have number plates on the front. Consequently, the Victorian government has a collection of photographs of my motorcycle with me in stupid poses or waving to the camera. It keeps me amused on the boring freeway trip from Melbourne to the Great Ocean Road.

well the estimation i use when i need to convert is take half and add it to get miles => km. (multiply by 1.5)
buy a cheap cell Android phone from an MVNO and don't activate it (or just a GPS). Mount to dash in a place where the screen's easy to see. Get GPS Tools. Display that while driving, configured to use the OTHER UOM from what's on your dash.
Also, it's worth pointing out a second time your dash is TRWTF--analog instruments were displaying both 40 years ago.

this is a lady that regularly lost points in calculus because once things got down to the algebra point a
- 1would sometimes morph into a+ 1or visa versa. and that was on paper with pencil!of course if i was solving that sort of problem for work i'd let the computer take over once i set the problem up (possibly after doing some of the harder calculus stuff by hand for the fun of it) so that wouldn't be a problem and i never lost points on the actual calculus parts.
Hah! I messed up the arithmetic (hint: subtracting -8 from 12 gives 20, not 4. It's a bit scary that I remember the specific numbers 30 years later) on my AP Calculus final, so didn't get 100%, but I got enough points that I could skip Calc I at college the following year.

it's lossy, but it does reasonably well for estimation for short trips and it's a lot easier to do in my head than the actual conversion.
Add 1/10 of the amount in miles to the result of times 1.5 and the result is actually very accurate (for a quick calculation).
The actual conversion factor is 1.609344.

well, i am back a generation on the model ('05) the new models do a lot better on MPG.
I'd also do better if i lived somewhere flatter so i didn't have hills and warmer so i didn't have to use the heater. ;-)

I drive a Daihatsu Mira with a mighty 660cc 3-cylinder motor. I bought it used for a tenth of what a new Prius would have cost, and it gets about the same fuel economy as your Prius on my regular commute. On long highway trips it does better - best I've got out of it was 4.5l/100km but it regularly beats 5.

I have never once owned a vehicle that got its rated MPG. My motorcycle had a "90 MPG" sticker on it, the highest I've ever gotten was about 60 though. I'm pretty sure they rate them by having a 90-pound Asian kid drive it 35 mph in sixth gear with a tailwind.

Are you very tall? I've never felt comfortable sitting in a car of apparent similar size. I also can't afford something that's only really useful for a commute (which I currently don't do anyways).

I never look at rated MPG. The car figure comes from the trip computer, and I work out an approximation on the bike each time I fill up. Last time was 16 litres for about 170 miles which I think came out around 52 MPG. Seems to be a bit better than what reviews claim, possibly because half my mileage is coming home from work after dark on windy roads, mostly in the wet, so I ride like a pussy

My Fusion Hybrid gets less than 50 MPG. It also weighs as much as 3 Godzillas and is roughly the size of New Hampshire.
For the size of car, it gets excellent mileage.

Six foot. One of the nice things about the Mira is how much headroom it has. My head tends to hit the ceiling in lots of small cars but there's plenty of room for me in mine.

OK, similar to me, although I tend to have more problems with legroom. My FIL is about the same size and he has problems with headroom, too.

I only need to put the seat all the way back if I'm driving in my big boots. If I'm barefoot, as I often am, two notches from the back is more comfortable.
The 1995 Mira is quite a boxy little hatchback (it's from the pre-bubble-car era) and you can fit quite a remarkable amount of stuff in there. I once moved a full-height, 3/4-width fridge 350km in mine, along with a bunch of other small furniture and a shitload of wine in boxes. Wasn't much room for me by the time it was all packed up, but still enough to drive safely.
Mine is the four-door in this color. Wheel at each corner, handles like a go-kart; lots of fun to drive.

We serialize that to the database as a timespan after local server midnight - so 12:00AM becomes 0:00. Noon becomes 12:00, 1PM becomes 13:00
The 12:00PM (Local midnight+12 hours in the database) schedule ran at 12:00AM. 11:59 OK. 12:01 OK. 12:00PM flips 12 hours out of phase.
