I take this to mean you haven't read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is a problem you should immediately fix.
I'd read it, but I don't recall any mention of Belgium until it was drawn to my attention that some people had received an adulterated version of the book.
-
Non-spam stuff rarely got deleted/hidden on the old board.
Honestly, on the old board, I normally ONLY read the sidebar forum, and usually only the newest handful of threads. It's why in 9 years I only had 650 posts.
People can--rightly--bitch about Discourse, but I've said this--and I know a couple other people have--before: it makes it a LOT easier to participate than pretty much every other forum out there, so in that regard, @codinghorror actually got something sincerely right.
-
So ■■■■■■■ as a curse word greatly predates Discourse?
I'd never even seen it until recently here. I mean, I assumed from context it was stolen from HHGTTG but it seemed to suddenly spring into existence in the last several weeks or so? Maybe a bit longer here. Remember I don't read that thread.
-
Do you know I didn't know about the censorship until reading it here--again, fairly recently, in the last month or whatever? I'd always thought "Belgium" was actually the original word all this time.
-
I first saw it early on in the Likes thread when we got like 5K posts in a couple days. I used @ChaosTheEternal's like script and only skimmed it, and there was lots of talk about the World Cup along with Belgium as a curse word so I'd figured they'd had some unexpected upset in soccer or something. I don't care for sports so I didn't look into it further. It never occurred to me this was something other than a local joke.

Well, that's what I thought too, except that since at first people were using 7 stars instead of "B*****m" I completely had no idea what word they weren't using. Even then, since I didn't know it was an HH reference, I eventually had to ask what the word was because I would probably have never thought of Belgium.
-
I think we both deserve a special "Woosh!" badge for not getting the joke for months.
-
I'm not going to disagree, although to be fair I don't see that it was all that obvious, unless there were tie-in HHGTTG references I didn't spot in other threads.
-
Where's my cluebat (aka previously mentioned +10 Wrecking Ball of ClueGiving)? I need to go visit the writers of that GL-DLG-ADM report.
-
I like Discourse. The other forum was crap ... it didn't work on mobile
I've got bad news for you...

Loving the reviews given below the download link.

I don't think it's fair to distribute woosh! badges for jokes which are only in the adulterated version of HHGTTG. I never put the link either, though I know i've heard belgium-as-a-curseword before, possibly even that line.
I've got the full series of hitchhiker's on the shelf, but in the UK version.

Dammit. I can't tell whether to mock you or not, since you didn't do anything but the video. Is that a tear of rage, shame, happiness, or something else

All of the above, after finding his first satisfied user

In fairness, it is understood outside of purely the book form. Certainly when the cast gets together for a live rendition, it gets a mention.

And there were a few nods in Doctor Who... at least I think there were. There was no other reason I could see to use B*****m in the dialog other than as a nod to Adams (who wrote stories for DW for a while).
-
Yup, that's also been the case too.
In fact on the live radio show tours, they actually burst into a brief rendition of the DW theme before going into the H2G2 theme. Or at least they did on the one I saw (and again on the one I didn't but have the audio recording of)

In any case, it is fair to say that trading CS for Dicksores is akin to exchanging being damned to lick Hades' butthole for all eternity, for endless reincarnations as a carrion beetle. Its still terrible, but not quite as terrible as the alternative.
