Topic notifications are linking to the wrong post
-
Topic notification (Top bubble by search) - clicking on the notification takes you to the first unread post in the topic rather than the notification post. I think this happened after the patch for the 'wrong post' jumpyness patch of the other thread, but I'm not 100% sure.
-
This could actually be better. Going directly to the post you were notified about may skip a bunch of unread posts, and you'll only be able to find the last post you actually read using Practical Discourse Methodology (i.e. manually scrolling and looking through the topic)
-
'Hey, you have a new notification, go there to check it out!'
'Hey, actually, here. Don't go to the notification. Go to the first unread post which could be literal thousands of posts back.'
-
You're probably right in the general case. I've just been bitten by the reverse, that I clicked on a notification, realized "Hey, I actually wanted to read those other posts" and had to scroll, wait for ajax, etc. to find where I was before.
Filed under: at least with a paginated forum I could just click on a number
-
This is why I always check to see how many unread posts there are in the topic before I respond to notifications. I've been burned, too.

How exactly does Dicksource get things such basic things wrong? Duplicate topic IDs, multiple likes, etc.

It's trying to be TOO smart. With all the fancy read/unread counters and widgets and whatnot, you come to expect it to work. It's so damn simple too - just DONT MARK THE GODDAMN TOPIC AS READ JUST BECAUSE THE LAST POST WAS ON THE SCREEN. They have a way to tell what you have/haven't read, why can't they display that number instead of showing the # of posts left after the last post you saw, even if you missed a bunch of posts in the middle (usually by accident).

Not to mention that Discourse fully knows which posts were actually read in the topic -- But AFAIK it’s only used for gamification purposes (the whole “read 50% of all posts for TL3”). A “jump to first unread post in topic” function would probably not be too complicated to implement.

Even a "Show only unread posts" button in a topic.
And/Or a filter like "Show only topics with unread posts" on the front page.My bet is that the posts I don't have marked read are all ones that I've actually already read but the server was shitting itself and didn't save the read status.

FTFM. It's Discourse; I don't expect it to work.workbe broken. They have a way to tell what you have/haven't read, why can't they display that number instead
USENET newsreaders could do this 30 years ago. Why can't Discourse get it right?

is it time for me to be recycled already?

Well, only after you've completed @sockbot, so it can be your successor.
-
note to self: never release version 1.0 of @sockbot.

@accalia has summoned me, and so I appear.

I'm glad I'm not quite 30 then.

If @aliceif's statement were true, which I do not accept at all, I would be way overdue.

Yep, a number of us would have to “head to the hills”…

And yes, Discourse, I am purposefully using the Resurrection Stone on this f'ing topic.

Look, it even has rainbows! That makes it good right? Right?
