The minor rants thread.

  • That's right, I made one! In this thread you can complain about all those things that make you angry, but aren't interesting enough to deserve a whole thread.

  • I'll start.

My router's WiFi just stopped working for no apparent reason. I checked the settings, did a reboot, then a full factory restore, but the light stays off and there's no connection. But the bad part is the router, an ISP-provided Huawei HG622, doesn't seem to exist. Literally no official website has one single mention of it. I can only assume that a crate of full of instances of it spontaneously materialized in some mysterious warehouse one day.

Seriously, is it that hard to keep track of products you make? I'm not even asking for a complete manual or software updates, just a name! "Yes, we made that in 2012, it has WiFi and shit, now go away" would be better than nothing.

This seems to happen with a lot of stuff that I have. The models that I can find are all one digit off, somehow.

  • Someone commented out a stored procedure call in a package sometime in 2007, with a note that said, "commenting out - no longer used", and a reference to a request #. The request # said that the functionality was implemented elsewhere so the old code no longer needed to exist.

I had spent nearly a week replicating the stored procedure before finding today that it is never called anymore. I noticed because my data is wrong. So I changed my replication to replicate what supposedly replaced the old stored procedure, only to find out that somehow my data got MORE wrong.

Now I see that the old one was axed but the new one was never turned on. 7 years ago. Not only is the data in the database 7 years out of date, it's 7 year outdated data that was pulled from the wrong source anyway. Now it matches to exactly nothing, with no way to match it because what it has now no longer exists anywhere else. And no one even noticed.

    What a waste of time.

  • I would be scared we worked for the same place if you had said 4 years, but the column that gets updated by a buggy package here has only been wrong for that long.

  • But tis I who uses bing! So don't feel too bad.

  • Google finds the shit out of that thing, too. I can only assume that @anonymous234 used the manufacturer's broke dick web site to look for his model.

  • True, but Google (at least for me) doesn't return anything official looking on the first few pages. (...unless I missed it.)

  • Nope. I am trying Bing and Google now, the problem is both try really really hard to only show me pages from my country, even when I explicitly tell them I want English results from anywhere in the world (which they make really hard to do). That link is nowhere to be seen.

Related rant: why does so much software not understand that I can speak 2 languages, and sometimes want to switch from one to the other without having to navigate 25 submenus? (or worse, entering undocumented URL parameters)

Oh wait, DuckDuckGo does. I should never have left you, Dax the duck.

Open WRT has some information: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/huawei/hg622

    Another Manual: http://kochise.com.es/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/HUAWEI-HG622-Help-Desk.pdf

It probably goes by an alternative name (many manufacturers group similar models on their site)

i think the idea is that certain members of the population like to rant, and others hate reading the rants, putting them in one topic means the ones that want to rant can rant and the ones that don't want that can mute the topic.

at least i think that's the theory. we'll see how it goes.

  • I should have put a sarcasm tag in

  • sockdevs

    you didn't?

  • Apparently not

  • sockdevs

hmm.... i must have inserted it automatically while reading and decided to keep the sarcasm going.

    .... whoops?

  • In any case we're delightfully going of topic unless we quickly start ranting about who deserves a whoosh badge the hardest

Is it possible to use a proxy server, or does your country ban that too? (Probably yes on the latter, but bringing it up as a remote possibility to be helpful.)

For Google, add &gl=us to the URL to get the US view, &gl=uk to get the UK view, etc. I don't think you can get a completely country-agnostic view, but that's a start…

  • Unfortunately, Discoursistency. One can see that invisibly small text if one replies and full-quotes, but if one replies to your post by highlighting the text and clicking "quote reply," that invisibly small text does not get quoted, and the person replying doesn't even know that anything is missing.

Does anyone ever do that? I just had to work out how to do it, and it wasn't at all obvious. Indeed, without the hint above that it was possible, I wouldn't even have tried. And I've been here since the first days of Dicsourse.

    I'm tired of this software.

I highlight-quote more often, but I sometimes do full-quote. I did it just now. Jeff would say it's discoverable, because there is a big, obvious reply button, and once the editor opens to type your reply, hovering over the leftmost button at the top of the editor (unless you're using mobile; in which case, sucks to be you) reveals the tooltip "Quote whole post."

  • Oh, I'd certainly agree it's more discoverable than most of the other basic functionality. Part of why I'd never noticed it before is that I never do "button bar" formatting, and part of why that is is to do with the overall quality of Dicsource - I don't trust it to produce something it's capable or parsing.

I'm getting more and more jaded. It was fun poking holes in Discourse for a while, but now it's become just a fucking chore to use. Arguably more trouble than the site is worth.

  • @ben_lubar said:

I could care less about [insert important issue].

The thing that really fucks me off about that type is that you need to already know what someone was trying to say to be able to smugly correct them. So if you consider that the purpose of communication is to transfer information, and you realize that has to have already happened before the fucker can tell someone what they've done wrong, it's easy to see that the only reason for correcting someone's usage is to make the grammarian feel superior.

To them, failing to parse a sentence that an average person could comprehend is seen as a sign of intelligence, and that's fucked up.

  • I'm not racist but [insert statement that is neither racist nor a pun] -- no pun intended.
