Eventually you have to ditch the crutch of the word “beta” and be brave enough to say, yes, we’re ready. It's a good statement, although in this case it's more like, "Yes, we're tired of trying to fix everything that's currently buggy, broken, or useless so let's just man up and ship as-is. Patches are the internet's entire purpose (aside from porn)."

+1 because "like" is not enough and doesn't seem to be a thing.

It probably isn't useful. It certainly isn't Jeff's house and the only other possibility listed on the Discourse Team is just an advisor.
You mean the "El Cerrito" one? IIRC Jeff is living in El Cerrito, he certainly gives that as his whereabouts on one of his "about" pages on the net. SO? codinghorror.com? Can't remember right now.
-
I'm sure @presidentsdaughter will send us a message if she finds him.

I'm sure @presidentsdaughter will send us a message if she finds him.
Can't be difficult. El Cerrito doesn't look that big... but I still wonder what she will do. For some reason or other though, Carrie Fisher in the "Blues Brothers" popped up in my mind right now.
-
I found an address but it's just a kind-of junky-looking house. So I don't think it's correct...
If you mean the one listed here for "correspondent", I think that might be his private address. I don't know US law, but businesses don't need to have a separate business address normally... "it all started in the garage".

Wow, the internet is amazing... just discovered "BlockShopper".

I had the impression I was in the get-kidnapped business, not on the finding missing persons.

You are also the heroine of a story @abarker and /me are currently writing. It starts here.

Yeah, but Jeff's his friend. I doubt he'd help us snipe his trademarks.
The kind of lawyer he is? Sure he would!

I know the 'buy this trademark for $$$' has already been mentioned, but what I also find particularly interesting is whatever algorithm came up with the prototype Discourse logos and eviltrout's ForumWars logo beneath them.

So... they bit the bullet.
They bit something.
Filed under: 62 posts and no one else thought this?
Also: why does "quote whole post" paste only to the end of my post - and not at the cursor?? Sigh.

Also noted: two months ago (almost to the day) he announced that v1.0 would ship in one month.
Filed under: 2==1, a truish value.

So just because that's how long it took them, that's how long it takes in general?

It’s a bit like building an airplane in flight.
i hate this analogy. bosses love using it. especially that stupid ibm commercial.
But guess what, while the boss is loving his fancy flying-under-construction airplane, us programmers doing the real work are scared shitless because we know that working in those circumstances generally has one outcome - it's only a matter of time before the entire flying piece of shit goes down and it's taking us (the programmers) with it, regardless of how many times we tried to tell them that we need to finalize and test before we just start throwing people onboard....
[/quote]I always hated the analogy as well. You can't build an airplane in flight unless certain requirements are met:
- The wings would have to be complete, so that the damn thing can fly.
- The engines have to already be mounted.
- This means that the fuselage has to be able to hold everything together.
- Generally, if the skin of the fuselage has massive holes, it will cause enormous drag issues and bring the entire thing to the ground.
- You need to have the controls in place so someone can keep the damn thing from crashing.
Basically, you have to basically be done, and just be at the point of putting the bells and whistles on for this analogy to work.
-
Perhaps a better analogy is airdropping a large crate of airplane parts and an engineering team and having them assemble the plane and fly away before they go splat on the ground.
Actually, that's not a better analogy at all. But it is more amusing.
-

It generally depends on the state. I know here in Arizona it is perfectly legal to register your business at your home address.

It also depends on the type of business and local zoning.
-
In line with @codlnghorror's car analogies:
It's like refueling your car while driving around the gas station in a circle.
And changing the tires at the same time.
-
It also depends on the type of business and local zoning.
At least here in AZ, that only impacts where the main portion of the business can operate. It has no impact on where the "corporate headquarters" are registered.
-
I always hated the analogy as well. You can't build an airplane in flight unless certain requirements are met:
Just build it in the back of a bigger airplane. Derp.
Get a kit plane you can assemble in a few hours, put it in one of those big Antonov cargo planes, go at it. They got like a 12-hour range, you got plenty of time to put a kit plane together.
You guys need to do one of those creating problem solving workshops.

Yes, because that totally matches up with the vid everyone loves to use with that analogy.
-
I totally have never seen a vid used with that analogy.
-
The holes were covered with paper mache, it will be fine.
-
But they're still winding up the rubber band…

Interesting. I wonder what you actually get for $159. You do not get the trademark, or even the application; the USPTO application, itself, has a fee of $350.
If you do get a full trademark search, it might not be a bad deal. It is possible to search the USPTO's database yourself online for existing trademarks, and not too difficult if you have good search-fu, at least for "word marks." However, they strongly recommend hiring a trademark attorney, because USPTO will also check for existing trademarks that are not federally registered. It may or may not be possible to do this yourself, but I have no idea how; presumably a trademark attorney does, but I suspect it would cost more than $159.

Also: why does "quote whole post" paste only to the end of my post - and not at the cursor?
Noted a couple of months ago. Behavior is different than "quote reply." WONTFIXWORKSASDESIGNED. I don't remember the explanation, but I think it basically boiled down to "that's the way Jeff expects it to work, and he thinks everyone else has the same expectations."
-
-
Don't get me wrong - I understand this is like complaining about fog in San Francisco. But after a bunch of foggy days, you just get tired, you know?, and you say stuff...'cuz you need to... but of course it won't change a thing.

Yeah, pretty much.Filed under: This is a barrier to coherent typing.

This is Jeff we're talking about. Over the past few months I've come to learn that he never listens to anybody unless that person says something that correlates with his opinion.
It doesn't matter how many people say something, or how reasonable they are. If it doesn't correlate with whatever Jeff thinks, then he has no intention of listening to you.
The irony of taking this approach in creating a "civilised discourse" forum is delicious.

You have to trick him into listening to you, mixing stuff he thinks is reasonable with your real point (and that stated in a way he can accept). It's a bit like dealing with senior management, except Jeff can't fire you.
-
At least my fauxjeffpuppet has come in handy for making fake quote attributions to a fake jeff.

I've also found success presenting my points using a puppet that has no visible connection to TDWTF. I'll see a TDWTF member report a bug on meta.d and Jeff will CLOSED WONTFIX BYDESIGN. I'll open a new topic with my puppet to report the same bug, and suddenly the bug is a priority. I've had limited success doing this with a handful of features as well. Though I must be careful. Don't want him to get suspicious. ;)
-

I owe you a debt of gratitude, sir
-
Why bother with fake quote attributions? The amount of shit that just comes out of his mouth, there's plenty of actually quotable material
-
Finally, a solution to the Bugatti Veyron problem! (At top speed, the tyres will disintegrate in 15 minutes. But that's ok, because you'll run out of fuel in 10 minutes)
-
If we're going for better analogies, I nominate building a boat while you're already on the water.
- To start off with, you have some basic structure you can build off from
- In order to have features, support for it must be there (for it to both exist, and to actually work)
- There's a very real chance of it sinking or being dead in the water because something is missing, or it's full of holes
- Completely possible to lack any direction
- People can go overboard
- Mutiny
-
Lost at sea?
-
That too; I guess that would be the result of (scope) drift, lack of direction, then either being dead in the water because nothing works, or sinking because it's full of holes or has a great big one.
-
It's like you're describing Discourse perfectly.
-
In that case, let's just wait for the mutiny then? Followed by plank walking if we're lucky.
-

Most of the ones that I've done have been real quotes or paraphrasing.
I just like the @codlnghorror avatar better.
-
lack of direction
caused by not or not properly implementing features like compass or some kind of steering ...
like the analogy more then the plain thing
-
"cake farts" - worth a google if you are not at work.

that video was just plain bleh, it's of such crappy (pun legitimately not intended) quality that it isn't worth watching even if you were into that kind of thing.
Search "fake carts" instead.

We totally should send them a cake, I am not even kidding. What are the logistics of that?
brownies show up at Jeff's house
alex denies all knowledge
blakey did it?edit: woooo! I am post 100! do I get brownies now?
