&@#^ YEAH! My estimate was right :D

  • estimate?

  • Ok, I'm slightly jealous right now.

I assume "estimate" refers to when it's going to be shipped. For the v1 kit there were a few 3:rd party resources/pages dedicated to figuring out when yours would ship, based on the Order ID and to where it was going to be shipped. IIRC those got the date for mine right to approx. +- 1 week.

  • Not sure what estimate refers to, but dk2 arrived two days ago, got to play with it last night. After about two hours fighting stupid issues that I suspect had more to do with all the beta stuff I had installed for visual studio, unity, etc I got it working.

I am quite impressed, and it's already several million factors better than Google glass (at a small fraction of the cost). Even the stock silly vr demos from oculus and some test apps in the wild get an amazing quality boost when viewing as a 3d image.

Right now, I'd rate it about 8.5/10, will definitely buy the consumer version of the rift when its out. My rating will probably increase as I familiarize myself with it, develop some apps and have others make toys as well. Going to investigate skyrim and Mass Effect visual mods this weekend.

Porn will definitely be a thing, since I know you wanted to know. The demo apps are promising in this area too.

I think it's currently being made about 800/day, shipping about 8000 a month, but those numbers are based on two waves, and I ordered mine in the first few weeks of April.

Unless ben means my estimate, then that's just when I thought rift would ship.

Well, those two are pretty different devices. Oculus is about virtual reality, from what I know - something you get immersed into - while Glass is about augmented reality (kinda like a phone, only always in the corner of your eye).

So it's pretty much apples to oranges - no matter how cool Rift ends up, I'm still not going to wear it while commuting.

  • They're not quite apples and oranges, but if you were to compare what oculus rift sets out to do, and what google glass sets out to do, google glass is an extremely terrible infant prototype that doesn't even come close to where oculus rift dk1 was.

Still, Glass fits my use case (going around town and having a map handy, playing some Ingress, checking the bus timetable, getting reminders and such) way better than Oculus exactly for that reason - one sets out to do a very different thing than the other.

  • Sell you mine.

  • Oh shit I think we have a glasshole here.
