'Posts' count on topic boards
-
Can we change this from the distracting red to something else? (IMO grey scale, with black being the deep red and varying shades of grey)
It's honestly really distracting to see 75% of the topics having a red post count, and some don't, even though they are higher on the topic list.
Yes, this is an extremely minor issue that probably only impacts my OCD.
-
We're arguing this right now on meta.d (and discussing in the Likes thread):

That onebox is only mildly confusing to this context.
-
That's supposed to be a fucking heatmap? You're kidding me.
-
This is another one of those Discourse things where the more you know about what's going on, the more confused you are.
-
And the heat map isn't accurate. Gray is cold, red is cool, orange is hot, and orange is hottest.
No, they apparently couldn't be bothered to differentiate between the two highest points on the map. Yes, the spec they listed was supposed to have those four points.

When is a heat map not a heat map...

The people responsible for that don't seem to have that problem.Ok, I don't like much of the posts over there, either.

.topic-list .badge-posts { color: #000; } .heatmap-low a { color: #040 !important; } .heatmap-med a{ color: #080 !important; } .heatmap-high a{ color: #0f0 !important; }

This seems like a stupid metric, it doesn't encourage me to look at any particular topics above any others. I guess it's something else to override in my custom stylesheet.
-
This seems like a stupid metric
I think the metric is interesting, though its utility isn't completely clear.
-
If I had any understanding of how it worked, other than by magic and voodoo, I might agree with you.
-
The metric is (# posts in topic) / (# likes in topic). The communication of the metric was a new low in design failure.
-
And, IIRC, topics with less than 10 posts don't show the metric.
-
So how does that relate to low/medium/high exactly? And why is a thread with a high like/post ratio more interesting than a thread with a low like/post ratio?
I don't just mean in this place, but in general. The longer a thread goes on, the higher the chances are it will attract likes, simply by snowball effect, not because of the actual content of it, and that's even excluding threads like our 'artificial' one.
-

https://github.com/discourse/discourse/blob/master/app/assets/javascripts/discourse/models/topic.js
likesHeat: function() { var likes = parseFloat(this.get('like_count')), posts = parseFloat(this.get('posts_count')); if (posts < 10) { return; } var ratio = (likes || 0) / posts; if (ratio > 2.0) { return 'heatmap-high'; } if (ratio > 1.0) { return 'heatmap-med'; } if (ratio > 0.5) { return 'heatmap-low'; } }.property('like_count'),
-
So we have hardcoded magic values in it, fucking awesome.
(Thanks for sharing.)
-
It's unclear. I suspect we use Likes more (and not just in that thread) than other sites, in part because the point of this site is to entertain each other. Another point is that it fucks up their bug tracking.
-
Ah so we're Doing It Wrong™ as usual.
-
-
Sounds absolutely consistent for Discourse, doesn't it?
-
Actually, no. Gray should be the hottest. The attention grabbing colors should be the ones for low ratios.
-
That makes more sense than using blue to indicate old topics instead of grey.

The 'why not Zoidberg?' or the 'woopwoopwoopwoop' bit? Or the 'ohhhhh sadface' bit?

Consistency is overrated. Discoverability is what matters.
Well then, even from his own requirements he has failed on Discourse. The only shit I have discovered on this shit software has been by accident.

Yes. I feel trolled by iTunes and I own a MacBook *facepalm*

Indeed.
I thought it was MacBook FacePalm™

Where do I buy this?!?!?
At any vastly overpriced electronics store.Unfortunately I think there's only one chain that falls into that group; the rest are merely overpriced. Even Dixons/Curry's in the UK fall into the latter category.
-
Awesome, thank you.
-
I don't go into electronics stores. I buy online
-
I'd use my referrer link, but I'm too lazy.
-

All the stores I had in mind have (or had) an online presence.
"Other (Mom+pop) stores are also available in some areas."
-
I don't buy electronics all that often, though, so I generally just go to Amazon, as it seems to be generally the cheapest.
