Anyone else hate the Oracle Instant Client?
-
It's literally a 100MB package minimum if you want to talk to an server.
100MB just for fucking SQL queries.
Need to setup a server to do some Oracle nonsense?
great, need to download the fucking instant client to compile agaisnt it.Let me just wget it...NOPE, need to agree to some EULA bullshit nobody reads and manually download it and upload it to the server.
Type, type, compile modules....
Wait, there's an instant client SDK that is needed to be used for anything fucking useful. Can't wget it, got to manually download.
Upload to server.
Extract to the same folder as the main instant client package because having an SDK include the main package is so 18th centuryThe stupid thing better be converting my SQL into XML and then JSON, base64ing it and putting it into INI format before sending the message to the server to justify the package size.

I've had it installed for so long that I forgot what a pain it is.
-
Just wait til you need the full Oracle lib.... weighing in at 500+MB IIRC
-
Hahaha..had to..unforunately.

I just found this thread by accident. Necroing to express agreement. Fuck that thing. RPM packages only, too, had to use
alien
. Last time I had to use that was Ubuntu 6.06 or something. Also, fuck connecting to Oracle from PHP, the only PHP component I ever had to compile from source. Apparently, it's so shitty it's not even in Debian repos.
-
Humm... I think I was told to use "isqlplus" to connect to Oracle server and run queries.
Oh nevermind, it has been deprecated. Seems that "you can hit SQL worksheet on Performance tab of Enterprise Manager page to run queries there with similar interface" suggested on the replies.

Nonono! You're supposed to buy the third party tool that let a child design their brand! Hint: It starts up with a ribbbit!

It's been so long since I had to suffer Oracle that I just assumed that Larry Ellison shipped a graphical UI to submit queries in 2016.
But no - people really pay this kind of money for a SQL editor?
-
@skotl Yes, Oracle gives away sqldeveloper, which has problems but is pretty decent overall.
-
Oh he did. the 90s called and wants their IDE back.
-
@skotl The only Toad I want is Hypnotoad!

I understand your complaint, but you should feel like a privileged citizen. The IBM DB2 Client I've had to install on my machine is 893 MB installed.
...well, probably much more than that, actually. That's just the Program Files folder.
Don't you feel better now?
