Filed under: The only way Eve Online can fight bots

I remember when RuneScape started their big fight against bots and the client started doing all kinds of weird things like having colors be subtly wrong on textures and spawning random items on the ground for one frame.

There was a Guild Wars 2 bug a while back where mineable candy corn would show up for a single frame at random when it wasn't halloween, but I don't think that was put there intentionally to fight bots.

Bots aren't that much of a problem in GW2 since the game is made so you can't "steal" resources from another player, but I have seen gold selling spam a few years back and just recently I saw this:

I'm pretty sure most game servers aren't made to run for large numbers of days in a row without a reset. Even MMO servers eventually turn off and back on.

And now you know why (If it's using Unreal Engine). If they weren't (or the loaded level wasn't recycled every now and then) then eventually it would just stop accepting players.

In Source Engine, the float used for time is computed on each frame from an integer tick count and (on the client) some interpolation factor. There isn't anything that can cease to work due to float underflow.

Possibly a warning flag. Depends on the frequency of occurrence. A small number of times a year? No big deal. Multiple times a week (it's Wednesday, after all)? Very big deal.

Well, he was known to be partial to drinking beer whenever he could (eg. birthdays and such) back when he was coming to the office.

We are instituting daily calls and we'll probably move him to 2 days in office 3 days off.
Some people can handle working remote, some just can't.

The only thing I can reliably conclude from my watching of those two episodes was that apparently the island's cohesion field is apparently controlled by an inverse flow of a bathtub plug that un-generates waterfalls when displaced.

WTF did I even just write?!?

Status: Interesting Generic problem in Java. Function call worked fine as a direct assignment but failed with a design-time error of 'Found x, required T' when used inline as an argument for another (non-generic) function.

Apparently the compiler couldn't work out the correct type when used like that but could for a straight assignment, weird.

Added a 'type witness', now that I know that's a thing, and everything is good.

Edit: I wish Java generics could handle primitives like C#. Have to make non-generic function overloads, bleh.

You need an updated version of SSDT, at least 17.1, to use SQL 2016 syntax like that.

Which, if you're using Visual Studio 2017, is a bit of a copper plated bitch, since they pulled SSDT into core VS rather than leaving it as a plug in. They finally realized their mistake and have a preview version of the stand-alone SSDT tools available for VS 2017, but I can't speak to the effectiveness or accuracy of the preview (I'm still using VS 2015 🤷♂ )

    Fucking liars.

I stopped watching like... end of season 2 I think? When it became clear they had no fucking clue where they were going with anything. (Around the same time I stopped watching Battlestar Galactica around the time they turned Starbuck into Space Jesus? Or something so stupid I couldn't even comprehend it?)

Lesson learned: shows with really strong openings and first seasons turn into shit later on.

Shows with really weak openings and first seasons (think Star Trek: TNG) turn into gold later on, if they can survive long enough.
