  • @dse After all these years, they finally managed to replicate Debian's upgrade experience ?

@TimeBandit Close. Except their software is about 5 years newer.

It is much more impressive to upgrade to kernel 4.9.10 and fresh cut of master packages, than stale months-old (or years?) packages that are passed their expiration date

    🚎

I like Debian for stable production machines, but for myself I much prefer Fedora Workstation's freshness.

TFW your torrent client doesn't have the option to shut down computer after download is completed, but it has option to run arbitrary command, so you always used shutdown -sf, but now you notice that in some recent update they added shutting down as proper feature with nice, intuitive menu that even lets you to choose between sleep, hibernation and full shutdown (and for some reason, reboot).

I've gotten to the part where I have to delete all the settings and try again.

I have also gotten to the point in the setup process where all dialogues and windows disappear and I have to force quit the application.

Azure Functions provide event-based serverless computing

Status: Wondering where these Azure functions run if they're not running on the Azure servers because they're serverless.

    Edit:

The first time we run the function, we’ll be prompted to install the Azure Functions CLI (command line) tools.

You mean the 126MB tools download doesn't include all the tools?

Editit: Having now read the full article... I'll stick to WebJobs, thanks.

    But WebJobs aren't serverless! 🙀

You can use this on your desktop

or, if you really want the latest packages

FileUnder: Yum : stay away from my machine

  • Status: So I've had this VirtualRoot server running for quite a bit now, to the point where newer offers (for the same price, mind) are quite a bit beyond what my current config is (1 core vs 4, 1 GB RAM vs 8, 25 GB HD vs 250 GB SSD) and thus I asked my provider if I could trade up.

Certainly. I just have to fill out this form. Which is a PDF. Which is obviously a Word document printed as PDF - thus no input fields. But they do ask me to send it by email. I could, of course, print it, fill it out with a pen and then send them a photo of the form on a wooden table...

Yeah, we tried setting up Amazon Lambda. It couldn't do what we wanted (receive error reports from Unreal and put them in a bucket). FFS it's just a fracking file!

Can be. Note that the Prismrivers change patterns depending on the character you play as: I find them easiest as Marisa.

I haven't tried Marisa or Sakuya, only Reimu.

  • @JazzyJosh I wish that was actually as good as the second DS one, but it went the way of Mario Maker...

  • @RaceProUK Reimu's focus is really good damagewise, probably even better than Marisa's slightly wider pattern, whereas Sakuya's homes in. Apart from the Prismrivers, Sakuya is probably the easiest.

64-bit integers before the cycle repeats. Is this enough?

given that that is not 2^64.... i'm going with "no"

    🍹

  • @accalia why would anyone want a random number generator to generate all the numbers between 0 and 264-1 exactly once, then go on to repeat the same numbers in the same order?

I mean, I suppose it could be useful to have a random number generator that's guaranteed to give every possible number once before repeating any of them, but there's no specific reason why it should then repeat the whole exact cycle. And you're putting a constraint on its randomness, so it's not returning good random numbers for most purposes.

That's a bit like return 3; // determined by roll of a fair die...

oh, that's when you lose a duel where the other guy didn't cheat. (you can cheat and lose and it's still a fair die.)

A hardware random number generator device, typically in the form of a solid polyhedron of uniform density and shape, with 4 or more flat polygonal faces and some number or other identifier printed or marked upon each of those faces, which can be given a random velocity vector and which then settles by the actions of gravity and friction to display a single identifier marked upon a specific face relative to its position at rest (typically either the top or the bottom face), usually a number within the range [1, n] where n is the number of sides it has (often in the form of a fixed pattern of dots, the number of dots in the pattern on each face being the number represented by that pattern), although sometimes colors, letters, or shapes are used to identify the individual faces instead of numbers.

    Fair enough?

  • @anotherusername You mean, like a dice ?

@TimeBandit die is the correct singular of dice :pendant:

No, die is a correct singular of dice. :pendant:

  • @TimeBandit said in The Official Status Thread:

Two or more of them would be dice. [Edit: doubly :hanzo: d]

@anotherusername said in The Official Status Thread:

3 or more flat polygonal faces

I suppose technically >= 3 is a weaker statement than>= 4 and therefore not precisely untrue...

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

    @CarrieVS
Though, if you need to roll a d% for your dungeon crawler, you're rolling two polyhedral objects that, collectively, make up a single unit of randomness. So percentage dice would be a singular usage of dice...

No, that's when you chop something (typically some type of food) into approximately cube-shaped pieces.

  • I just moved a <100KB file between two folders (in the same drive) and it took literally 10 seconds.

    And it's a SSD!

  • @izzion But I don't cut paper with a scissors, or draw a circle with a compasses.

TIL. Always saw it written as "dice".

Die: to pass from physical life
OR "various tools or devices for imparting a desired shape, form, or finish to a material or for impressing an object or material"

Status: Only about 3 hours on the clock so far this week and I've already lost half my day to support emails that the person I'm providing info to can't apparently keep straight and failing to perform a database migration in our test environment because our copy of the environment seems to have domain controller issues. All while also juggling two other projects officially, and probably two more that will require my input ongoing. Friday can't come soon enough.

    @ChaosTheEternal That's not a die, that's a golf ball in a shell :P

  • @RaceProUK Thanks but, the Google, I know how it works 😜
