  • @polygeekery said in The Official Status Thread:

He hasn't posted, but hopefully he will soon.

I was wondering how long it would take anyone to notice. I've been lurking and upvoting sundry posts for a couple of days.

It's been almost exactly 6 months. I never intended to stay away that long β€” maybe a week or so, at most, to let the notification storm die down β€” but I noticed I was getting a lot more accomplished when I wasn't spending so much time here, and I didn't really have any particularly compelling reason to start posting again, so I did other stuff instead.

Whether any of the stuff I accomplished was actually worthwhile is another matter entirely. A lot of playing with Blender. A little playing with writing music. And my Skyrim character is now a level 37 battlemage who is about to finish the main story quest.

I also finished my contract at the company I was working for (which I won't name because there is a high probability of going back there). After much frugality and stress because I knew my contract was ending and recent experience suggested I might be out of work longer than I had money to survive, I found out on the last (or next to last; I don't remember for sure) day of my contract that I had a new contract lined up, with just one week off between them. Even better, this job will give me experience with a framework the lack of which was a major factor in the difficulty I had finding a job last time I was out of work; it won't be the 2 – 5 years that employers say they want, but it'll be a heck of a lot better than no on-the-job experience.

The new job started with 🎡 leavin' on a jet plane 🎡, including my first ever international business travel. All of the team I'll be working with is located in Tundraland, but at least they're in the same time zone and speak the same language (except for humourous spelling), so it's not bad.

I probably won't (and definitely shouldn't) spend as much time here as I used to. I have resolved not to log into TDWTF from any device that goes to work with me. There aren't many people who sit near me in the office here, and the few who do have no idea who I am or what I'm supposed to be doing. With everyone who knows what I'm supposed to be doing hundreds of miles away, it'll be way too easy to lose huge blocks of time to goofing off if I'm not careful. We'll see how long my resolve lasts, but for now (and hopefully for the duration of the contract), no TDWTF in the office.

@hardwaregeek well, welcome back. I am truly happy that things are going your way. I hope the run of good luck continues.

You should have known I would be the one to notice you were sort of back. I have missed tormenting you. I even wasted a good incorrect euphemism on someone else.

Come to think of it, I'm not even sure I could get to it in the office (without using all my phone's data). Like, I assume, a lot of companies, we have a separate WiFi network for employees' personal devices. I'm not sure how tightly it's locked down, but my first day on the job, I'm told "connect to the WiFi network called [redacted]; use the same credentials as the corporate network to authenticate." So I do, and the very first thing I see when I open Chrome is "This site has been blocked by corporate policy." That the very first site β€” that I didn't even try to visit; it just happened to be the current tab in Chrome β€” ran afoul of the filter makes me a little leery of pushing any boundaries. And no, it wasn't a "bad" site; I don't remember exactly what it was, but something with hints on how to get through a particular situation in Skyrim.

In other news, RIP that instance, it was running straight from July 2015. Not bad for a Windows server... Well, it was already dead and inaccessible, so it was no big deal.

I'd prefer if we went back to framesets and static HTML over the current "every website is one page even websites with many pages", because at least then there wouldn't be unhandled errors causing pages to do nothing at all when a problem happens instead of showing an error message or trying to recover.

Although, the occasional WTDWTF that I've done on mobile data really didn't seem to do that much to my data allotment; I think most of the resources get cached once. It'd probably mostly just begin to be a problem if I visited threads with large images and/or watched video embeds.

  • Status: I think either my Pixel or the whole Android Bluetooth stack (at least N and O) are borked.

My E-Bike which has a BT unlock / lock function - works only sometimes and if it doesn't work, requires me to reboot my phone. The key fob which also uses BT works find and reliably.
I installed a BT-audio to 3.5 mm audio-jack in my car. This also only works sometimes (rebooting the phone fixes that).
My BT headphones? Lose their connection if my phone is currently charging over USB-C.
My smartlock at my door? My phone takes ages to connect to it, sometimes not finding it at all (fixed by, wait for it, a reboot). The included BT key fob? Works flawlessly.

One incident is coincidence. Two make a pattern. And three definitely point to malicious intent.

I believe Outlook rules run on the local machine not the Exchange server, if that's right it wouldn't be acceptable as it requires a machine to be on and Outlook open.

  • I will probably check in my first code at the new job this morning. If I can figure out the version control system. It's basically SVN, but wrapped in scripts that add a bunch of complexity in the name of efficiency. But the system doesn't seem to work as documented. (One's working copy is supposed to consist only of symlinks to a cache, and only when one checks a file out does the symlink get replaced by a real, mutable file. However, my entire working copy seems to consist of nothing but mutable files. There are also wonky things about updating one's working copy with other people's changes; some directories don't get updated, or something; there was a massive failure to communicate between my technical lead and I when I asked about this.)
