Asterisks for bold and italic don't work in a div in some cases

If I write this:

<div>*This should be bold*</div>
    <div>*This should be italic*</div>

I'd expect to obtain this:

This should be bold

This should be italic

Instead I get this:

\**This should be bold**

\*This should be italic*

This seems to happen only when there is an empty line before the opening `

`. Wrapping the div in a blockquote fixes it.

To be fair, not parsing inline markdown inside html tags seems to be the consensus.
