Crystal Clear Errors

<FONT size=2>Brandon got this error in the Crystal Reports 8.5 IDE. How helpful!</FONT>

  • I work with that Brandon.  Believe me, Crystal Reports is NOT his friend.  [:@]

  • I'm glad we're finally getting rid of CR reports in my software project. I've been saying it since early 2003, and now finally they are gone! YAY!

  • We are here too, for which I am most grateful.

What are you using instead?  We went with SQL Reporting Services.  I'm pretty happy with it so far (6 months now).

  • For what we were doing CR was a tad overkill. I wrote a module to draw up the graphs we needed, added some cool javascript so that you can use a tracking bar across the graph and readout every x,y value. And I made the whole thing export to Excel (with an Excel graph) so that the client can do anything he wants with the data.

  • I see a lot of musical notes. Could it be whistling?

  • That error is just as helpful as the standard Crystal Error:No Error message.  I now know the usual items that cause it to show, but I cringe every time i see it.

  • I could translate the message, but it's not fit for public consumption :)

  • Doing the same project for the client, I also discoved the helpful behavior
of the Crystal IDE to crash if you have a text box longer than about 8
inches...  Of course, Crystal is fine until you try to scroll
down to the end of the textbox.  Really reinforces that notion of
make trivial change, click save button, repeat.

    More like gargling.

  • [8] Aaahhh.. music to one's ears! [8]

This kind of behavior is why I set every IDE, text editor, and debugger
I've used to save every few minutes and prior to every run/compile.
Even if now and then I'm frustrated by having to roll back and resave,
it's more than outweighed by not losing 20 minutes of code every hour.

If only I could get VBA projects to do that... (ugh, so many Access crashes.)

  • Happily I am perfectly able to translate this message as:

"I have just scribbled over a random bit of memory"
