Feature Request: Pending responses indicator

  • This may be simply impractical, but I was thinking earlier as I saw it real-time update with a new post that it would be great if it showed something like:

    [Two people are typing responses]

where the reply box is open by user(s).

I seem to remember ICQ had a similar notification and it was quite nice, as Discourse is a forum/chat hybrid it might work here too.

  • And we can have pm's make a sound like "Uh oh"

  • If this is a chat hybrid, I demand video conference calls.

    Ahhh, nostalgia.

Used to have this set up as SMS tone on my phone. It was fun looking at how many people had a visible reaction to it when getting a message in a crowded place.

  • :belt_onion:

Ah ICQ... that does bring back memories.
I still remember that stupid number, even though I can't remember the password to get into it... something stupid plain and generic. 38403982 ftw.

It just isn't what it used to be :frowning:

Edit: in other news I've just found the 'quote reply' option. Didn't know that was there.

  • So, @sam @codinghorror. What do you think? It was a serious suggestion.

I'm not sure if anyone on the dev team has read this. Maybe meta and bugs could do with some tracker style tags (won't fix, assigned etc..).

  • Invision Boards shows which users are currently looking at the thread, and which of those are working on a response. It's not real-time, but it works.

But regardless of whether it works, I don't know if it's useful.

THEN AGAIN by @codinghorror's own words: chat and forums share more DNA than expected.

Absolutely not. This is TDWTF forum. I'm willing to report bugs and strange behavior in the bug category to aide the resolution but not again the horror of splitting/forging this category in a Discourse bug tracker.

  • My fancy first idea for this is to show the small icons of current-viewing users at the bottom, with a visual marker to tell they're typing (or just have the response box open)

That's a much better idea. Would fit in with the user avatar markers that are already used on the like bar and other places.

we have a big topic about this stuff.

  • Ok, so @codinghorror doesn't like @dhromed 's suggestion of also showing viewing users. How about the original request which was just about showing active edit activity in each thread? That does not seem to be covered in that discussion.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

That has the potential to be absolutely disgusting (and illegal in many states too). Hopefully they both consented.

  • Go home, Discourse, you're drunk.

Someone actually messaged me with ICQ today (I assume someone from here)... apparently I did know the password at some point and added the ICQ login to the multi-messager app way back when and it's been auto-logging in ever since.

I think that was the first message I've gotten in ICQ in almost 10 years....
