Poll: Default poll item count limit
-
Continuing the discussion from We think there should be a limit on poll entries:
We need a poll so people can vote on the poll option limit. We'll need an option for each number between 1* and +∞.
* For the dictators among us.
Shall we start with some sort of binary search?
Note that this is for the default setting without admin intervention.
The suggestion being that admins can increase or decrease the limit on a board-by-board basis if the default is.... unsatisfactory... for some reason.

FILE_NOT_FOUND

This may be the first time that I've voted for something other than FILE_NOT_FOUND when it was an option.
I think we should support up to, but not including, ∞ poll options.
-
64 should be enough for everybody
-
You mean 264
-
Shall we start with some sort of binary search?
We should do a binary search to get at the limit for poll options before browsers start producing Stop Script prompts.
-
With giant polls it's also currently impossible to see the results. Maybe we need a way to summarize the actual votes, skipping all the options with no votes.
-
Maybe have it sortable by either option or vote count...
More a feature request at this point though I think, considering the other problems that we found last night...
-
-
I'm missing "(more than ∞)".
-

+1. Too many choices only tend to confuse the voters. With zero options, however, casting your vote is really easy!Edit: Oh, you mean only for displaying the results. Fine here, I certainly wouldn't change my vote to vote for an option no one else has voted for. Can't be a good choice, that one, if it is so unpopular.
-
I'm missing "(more than ∞)".
You mean you want ℵ1 options? You even understand how absurd that is?

*sigh*. I knew I should have picked some markup from [here][1].Filed under: but the Wikipedia article on ℵ1 makes some interesting reading

I choose 100. Judging from the phobia poll, there shouldn't be any performance issues yet. And 100 should be more than enough options for any serious (and many non-serious) polls.
-
100 should be enough for anyone.
Filed under, that's what she said, Bill Gates.

Having an infinite continuous set of options seems nice, but the radio button selection currently used in polls will not be sufficient.

We need a Cantor Control in HTML5.

A dropdown element would be great - hey, if it works with 200+ country names, why not use it for infinite choices in a poll?
-
Just because it works doesn't mean it works well. When all you have is a hammer etc. etc.
But then we'll have room for the next TDWTF article, which will become a five part miniseries if we give it to Erik.
-
Use Avogadro's constant.
-
infinite choices in a poll?
I'd hate to be the guy assigned to sign off on the test for that feature.

Infinni-Poll™ to the rescue!!!

-
Now you're just being awkward.
EDIT: Hey, wait, tab-enter actually handles proper form submission?! You mean that one instance of hijacking the browser works as expected?!?!?!
-
No, I want ℵℵ1 options.
Funnily enough [digressing here] it's an open question as to whether that makes sense; we don't know whether the set of Cantor transfinite numbers is countable or not; it's coupled to the continuum hypothesis. Here's a quick summary for beginners: if ℵ1 is the number of points between 0 and 1 on the Real Line, then there are ℵ0 transfinite numbers, as indicated by their index (and in fact the index proves it as you can use it as a bijection to the members of ℤ (which, as any fule kno, has cardinality ℵ0). However, all we have actually proved (the last time I checked at least) is that the cardinality of the continuum is greater than ℵ0 and no more than ℵ1…
The transfinites are fun, though the ones beyond ℵ1 are a bit brain-bending.
-
-
we don't know whether the set of Cantor transfinite numbers is countable or not
So you don't know if there are less or fewer numbers?
-
This is actually the expected result of studying infinities.
Filed Under: You're doing it RIGHT

This is actually the expected result of studying infinities.
Indeed. Look on the bright side, if you actually managed to comprehend any of the infinities, your brain would spontaneously collapse into a black hole and eventually consume the Earth.

But how would Marvin cope? He's 50,000 times more intelligent than we are. Well, he's 50,000 times more intelligent than I am. I don't know about anyone else.
-
His brain is the size of a planet, so the energy from the information is spread over a much larger volume. He still couldn't comprehend infinity though.
-
Despite being at least twice the age of the universe?

You're making me think too hard, I'm at risk of going full LHC.

Didn't he get shot in the back of a car?

No. He does get to see God's Last Message to His Creation before the light goes out in his eyes though.
It's been too long since I read Mostly Harmless to remember if he shows up there or not and if so, how come.

There you go. I actually had it on last night in the background as I was getting my desktop to not BSoD so I could pull code off of it from my last company to submit here.
