How do I get RSS links?
-
Lemme guess: Jeff Atwood's personal programming religion doesn't allow for the existence of RSS, so I'm fucked... right?
-
Try appending
.rss
to a page URL.http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/how-do-i-get-rss-links/246.rss
http://what.thedailywtf.com/latest.rssThis works with .json too.
Note: RSS links will normally "onebox" if you post them on a line by themselves. The hack for this is to put a space in front. To see this: http://what.thedailywtf.com/raw/246/2

GEE! If only HTML had meta-tags you could use to tell the browser about available RSS feeds! Wouldn't that be a handy thing!!!!!
Grump.
What the fuck does "onebox" mean?

What the fuck does "onebox" mean?
Well, it's this stuff:
EDIT: Also, I see this in the page source:
}); </script> <link href="http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/how-do-i-get-rss-links/246.rss" rel="alternate" title="RSS feed of 'How do I get RSS links?'" type="application/rss+xml" /> <meta content="What the Daily WTF?" property="og:site_name" />
That appears to be the correct format, after a quick search. Is it not being picked up by your detector?
Sorry if I'm being defensive - I think that Discourse is a really great project, and I want to see it succeed. Could use some more SITES WITH CUSTOM CSS ON THEM THOUGH.... COUGH COUGH.
-
And why do I want that shit in my posts?
-
This endless scrolling shit has already put them out of the running of "succeed",.
-
When I first came to the site, my browser detected the RSS. When I went to a particular topic / forum, it didn't. Then I tried the "append .rss" trick to the sidebar and I saw the raw feed. When I went back to the topic page, my browser was seeing the rss feed.
-
Opera detects the RSS and shows the icon in the address bar. No other browser (Chrome, Firefox, IE) seems to detect it, but then again I have no idea where it's supposed to show, so I could have missed it.
There's a surprising amount of websites that have RSS feeds but no link to them at all from within their main interface. phpBB, for example, seems to have feeds for all replies, all threads, threads within a subforum, active threads, replies to a thread, etc.

Viewing source on this very page, I see..<link href="http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/how-do-i-get-rss-links/246.rss" rel="alternate" title="RSS feed of 'How do I get RSS links?'" type="application/rss+xml" />
Not sure why browsers would have trouble detecting that. Is there some spec about RSS detection we're not meeting?

That works only after the first refresh of the page. The instant you click into a topic, or click a different category, or basically do any ajax load, the RSS auto-detection stops working.
Now once you know about this brokenness, you can "fix" the problem by simply refreshing your current page and-- yay-- there's the RSS auto-detect. But when I posted that complaint, I didn't know about the bug so I made the reasonable conclusion that there was no RSS support.

BTW are you hiring testers? Because holy crap you need some.

Pf, testing is for crowds!
-
I've re-read the previous 3 posts about 5 times now due to Discourse lying to me about new posts.

NECRO EXTREME!!!
As indicated by the Suggested Topics.

I had a brief moment of joy at the thought of mocking
@blakeyratsomeone for still not knowing what oneboxing was.Hmm. I wonder if this works.
Blakester, did this notify you?
