Where to find sprites/art

  • Not really a coding question, but here it is anyway.

Some friends and I are working on creating a video game and I need to find some art. The game is a 2D top-down action/arcade type thing in a science fiction setting. I'm not really sure how to find artists though...is there any kind of recommended forum where sprite artists hang out and would be open to contract work? Or for that matter, is anybody here talented at drawing sprites and interested?

... so, what's the title of your Purple Dildo game?

  •  There are lots of CC or GPL licensed cliparts available - as bitmaps and as SVG. The latter would allow lossless rotation, scaling, and shearing.

Googling, and first hit says http://openclipart.org/.

  • I used to hang out over at YakYak which is very gamer-centric, not just full of those who play but those who write, develop, test, promote, market, distribute.

They often share tips and tricks - some musicians will have volunteered tunes for developers, some artists created images and promo sites for gamers, etc.

Not guaranteeing anything, but I found the community helpful many times. YMMV.

  • The guy who writes code in Microsoft Word made this because neither of our artists are online. You can use it too.

    Pretty sure that's cheating.

Have you tried http://opengameart.org/? Even if you only use it as placeholders, it lets you get your game to the point that an artist can see that you're serious about actually finishing the game and hence worth negotiating with.

Nothing legitimizes your artistic talent like making forum posts with a Geocities color scheme.  Could you not figure out how to randomly change the font size and face, too?

Do you have an Angelfire portfolio-- sorry, I mean "Welcome to the Cyberportfolio of SOANDSO!!!!! =)"

  • i have no idea why the forum randomly added shitty colors like that.

And your post is so usefull. Now i have a goal in my life. Thank you.

Did you pay your monthly protection fee?

Edit: OP fixed the spelling error, but my joke is funny and you should all worship me.

Your post is strange and confusing.

But Bollywood Wannabe looks *amazing*. You should all vote for it on Greenlight.

  •  Different at least, and I've bought many games that I never played just to support interesting ideas.

Anyway, for OP, there are many, many times more people who can draw/art stuff than can code, I don't think you'll have difficulty.

I would avoid 'public domain' collections though; some are littered with lifted art from commercial games; and you don't want to get bitten.

My personal plan for games is to ship with crappy self-made art; but with super-easy support for dropping in player made graphic/audio mods. But Ihavn't released anything to the public since commodore 64 days (80 column terminal emulator..)
